About the role
Hornblower Group is a global leader in experience and transportation, operating water- and land-based experiences, ferry and transportation services, and vessel maintenance across more than 10 countries and 50 U.S. cities, serving over 20 million guests annually. The Deckhand position supports vessel operations, guest safety, and hospitality within City Ferry and other Hornblower subsidiaries.
Responsibilities
- Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers in accordance with the RESPECT SERVICE SYSTEM.
- Follow safety procedures to protect passengers and vessel; participate in routine safety drills for incidents including man overboard, fire, and abandon ship.
- Handle mooring lines to secure vessels to piers.
- Stand watch on bows, sterns, or bridge wings to identify obstructions and navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses.
- Assist Captain and supervisory personnel with maintaining vessel equipment and systems including HVAC, engine, and technical equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of all common areas; sweep, mop, and wash decks using brooms, mops, brushes, and hoses.
- Load and unload materials; remove trash from vessel.
- Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
- Perform security/safety patrols of all decks while underway; communicate with passengers, answer questions, and respond to complaints.
- Assist with boarding and disembarking of passengers.
Requirements & Qualifications
- High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) preferred.
- Ability to work extended periods without sitting.
- Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds.
- First Aid and CPR/AED Certification a plus but not required.
- Strong customer service, organization, and interpersonal skills.
- Highly detail-oriented with ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Listen effectively, assess situations, determine relevant issues, and suggest solutions.
- Working knowledge of computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.
- Ability to understand and convey written and verbal information clearly to coworkers and guests.
- Must be available for work nights, weekends, and all major holidays.
