Marine Operations - Senior Deckhand

About the role

The Senior Deckhand serves as a crew member with greater experience, knowledge, and responsibility than a standard Deckhand, as outlined in United States Coast Guard Navigation and Inspection Circular (NVIC) 1-91. This role involves supervising other deckhands during normal operations and acting as a team leader in emergency situations while embodying Hornblower’s RESPECT Service System.

Responsibilities

• Assign deck crew tasks and provide direction
• Stand bridge watch and assist in the safe navigating and maneuvering of the vessel
• Take command if the captain becomes incapacitated
• Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers as prescribed in the Respect Service System (RSS)
• Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the vessel
• Load or unload materials from vessels
• Handle lines to moor vessels to piers
• Stand watch to look for obstructions in the ship’s path or locate navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses
• Assist the Engineer in operating and maintaining ship equipment, including engines, generators, and winches
• Escalate mechanical or maintenance issues to the Director of Marine
• Be prepared to begin work at the scheduled time
• Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards
• Perform additional job duties as assigned

Requirements

• High School Diploma
• Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card) or ability to obtain and maintain
• Valid First Aid/CPR Certification or ability to obtain and maintain
• Valid Driver’s License
• Copy of DD214 if Veteran status
• Minimum three (3) months of experience as a Deckhand
• Excellent customer service skills
• Ability to effectively interact with passengers, riders, and fellow employees
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, quickly changing environment
• Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG, including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident/incident testing
• Availability to work weekends and all major holidays
