Responsibilities
- Anticipates the needs of the newsroom during breaking news.
- Commands fundamental knowledge of current events, politics and pop culture.
- Takes direction in fast-paced situations.
- Receives assignment and guidance from Executive Producer or Line Producer to:
- Research and write questions for anchors for guest segments, and exercises editorial judgment in selection of elements for segments.
- Write copy for anchor and reporter voices for live segments/readers as well as writing for headlines and captions and feature and news packages.
- Work with editors to turn around pre-taped segments.
- Pitch and execute stories and special and feature segments.
- Edit VO/VOSOTs at the direction of the senior production team.
- Support in production of special shows and projects as needed.
- Order graphics and write banners for assigned news-related stories and segments.
- Pull specific video and soundbites.
- Coordinate video, graphics and soundbites with the control room team during segments.
- Communicate with anchors and correspondents on segments.
- Work with Digital Line Producers and editors to clean up and update segments after they air.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 3+ years experience writing copy for network, cable, and/or local TV news in a major market.
- Background in journalism and TV, including strong news judgment & critical thinking skills.
- Must be flexible and available for on-call shifts, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required in a 24-hour news operation.
- Impeccable grammar and spelling, experience in news writing and feature taped packages, and ability to pass a comprehensive CBS News writing test.
Additional Qualifications
- Strong communication skills and ability to advise production assistants and junior staff in writing and editing broadcast copy.
- Superior news judgment.
- Command of AP style and broadcast writing.
- Detail oriented with ability to work and write calmly and efficiently in high stress, intense deadline, live TV environment.
- Be able to multi-task and handle multiple assignments for regular programming as well as rolling breaking news coverage.
- Able to work well in a team environment.
- Knowledge of ENPS preferred.
- A deep understanding of political news.
- Strong understanding of digital and social media. Knowledge and an enthusiasm for the future of digital media.
Benefits
- Hiring Salary Range: $78,135.00 - 78,700.00.
- The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
