About the role

HDR’s Mining clients have significant technical support needs for their greenfield and brownfield projects related to permitting, design, and operations. To support this growth, HDR is seeking a West Region Mining Practice Lead who is a Seller/Doer with a key focus on Technical Leadership, Project Management, Program Building, Staff Growth, and Business Development. A focus of the role will be project management, technical support, and program building.

The role requires technical leadership to guide project teams as to the approach, requirements, and scope to solve client challenges and lead projects to successful completion. Responsibilities include monitoring and communicating project status with HDR operations leadership, networking internally to identify and onboard the right multidisciplinary local and remote team members, and expanding program service offerings within the West Region through area and national teams. The role also involves training and mentoring newer mining team members.

Within business development, this role requires client interaction, awareness of client challenges, technical value development, and strong verbal and written communication skills for interactions with clients and internal staff such as project team members, business development leadership, marketing staff, and operations leadership.

The ideal candidate will have strong relationships and significant experience winning and executing projects for mining companies in construction materials, industrial minerals, metals, phosphates, etc. Additionally, this role includes recruiting personnel to continue growing the Mining Practice in the West Region, expanding service offerings and capabilities, serving as an active member of relevant local and regional organizations, presenting at industry events, mentoring project teams, and collaboratively developing proposals within the region.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership to guide project teams on approach, requirements, and scope to solve client challenges.
  • Lead projects to successful completion, monitoring and communicating status with HDR operations leadership.
  • Network internally to identify and onboard multidisciplinary team members for pursuits and projects.
  • Expand program service offerings within the West Region through area and national teams.
  • Train and mentor newer mining team members.
  • Engage in business development through client interaction, technical value development, and proposal positioning.
  • Recruit personnel to grow the Mining Practice in the West Region.
  • Serve as an active member of relevant local and regional organizations.
  • Present at industry events and collaboratively develop proposals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering, or closely related field.
  • 10 years of experience in a related field.
  • Maintains a professional or Engineering registration with related technical experience.
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse teams.
  • Works cooperatively with other business class regional directors, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers.
  • Committed to quality, improvement, and HDR values.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline (preferred).
  • PE in a minimum of one state; multiple states preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of related industry experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of mining project management experience.
  • Experience managing mining projects to successful conclusion (budget, schedule, safety, quality).
  • Familiarity with multiple commodities, soft and hard-rock mining operations, studies, design, and execution from exploration to closure and reclamation, greenfields, and brownfields.
  • Ability to successfully lead a team on projects.
  • Good planning, communication, and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent competence in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • MSHA certification (preferred).
  • Open pit and underground mine experience (preferred).
  • Hard rock, soft rock, and industrial minerals consulting and operations experience (preferred).
  • Mine software experience for block modeling (preferred).
  • Experience working for a mine operating company (preferred).

Pay

The targeted salary range for this position (based on experience and location) is $175,000 - $200,000.
