Welding Lab Assistant

About the role

This part-time position assists instructors and students in the welding lab and supports the daily operations of the Welding Technology Program. The role can work up to 18 hours a week.

Responsibilities

• Maintain welding booths, demo stations, and tool storage in organized, good working order, including repairing metal fixtures with plasma arc cutting and GMAW (MIG welding), using hand tools, minor troubleshooting and repair of welding equipment, and cleaning and organizing storage racks, shelves, and cabinets.
• Prepare and maintain lab spaces and equipment for daily operations and lab exercises.
• Preparation of materials and machinery for lab exercises.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area.
• Inspect equipment and notify the Program Coordinator of problems.
• Perform basic maintenance on laboratory equipment.
• Communicate effectively in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner with students, employees, faculty, and the general public.
• Carry out any other tasks as directed by the department to ensure the smooth operation of the program.

Requirements

• Ability to perform weldments in all positions using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) processes.
• Knowledge of welding processes including GMAW, SMAW, FCAW, GTAW, OFC, CAA, and PAC.
• Ability to manage time effectively.
• No direct supervisory responsibilities.
• Regular work required outside of normal business hours.
• Must be able to lift up to 65 lbs and perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, kneeling, climbing, using hands and fingers, and talking/hearing for extended periods.
• Must possess mobility to work in a standard shop setting and an outside environment, which may include exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures.
• Minimal travel required; must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• Must project a professional image at all times and be available to assist with day or evening classes.
• Must exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as staff and students with disabilities.
• Regular and punctual attendance is required.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in Welding/Welding Technology, or
• High School diploma or GED with one year of industry experience, or
• Industry certifications.
• One year of welding experience.
• Forklift certification (preferred).

This role operates in a welding lab and shop environment, including exposure to extreme temperatures. The position requires physical tasks such as lifting up to 65 lbs, standing, sitting, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, kneeling, climbing, and using hands and fingers for extended periods.
