Welding Inspector
About the role
E2 Consulting Engineers, Inc. (E2) is seeking a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to join our team. The position requires a CWI certification through the American Welding Society with relevant work experience in transmission/process piping and API-1104. The ideal candidate must also hold either the NACE Coating Inspection Program (CIP) Level 1 Certification or AMPP Basic Coatings Inspector Certification.
Responsibilities
- Familiarize yourself with approved construction drawings and company specifications.
- Understand the contract documents and their relevance to your project duties.
- Have a basic understanding of welding techniques, positions, consumables, weld preparation, and drawing requirements.
- Maintain a detailed inspector's logbook.
- Complete and submit inspection reports accurately.
- Take a proactive approach to safety and report any issues to the Chief Inspector, Construction Manager, and Safety Inspector.
- Plan and organize inspection duties in advance.
- Discuss design changes or material substitutions with the Construction Manager, Chief Inspector, and obtain necessary approvals.
- Verify that materials used comply with company requirements.
- Keep the Chief Inspector informed of any problems or anticipated issues.
- Understand the relationship between quality assurance, quality control, and inspection procedures.
- Ensure that a welding procedure is established and that each welder is qualified for their work.
- Monitor the quality of welds performed to ensure sound welds are completed.
- Verify that repairs made to correct defects in a pipe weld sufficiently correct the defect and satisfy the requirements as outlined by the appropriate codes and operator specifications.
- Ensure that all welding materials are of proper type and quality, stored according to manufacturers' specifications, and that damaged materials are not used in the pipe welding.
- Manage and reconcile complex project documentation to maintain complete material and weld traceability, including weld maps, heat numbers, weld numbers, material test reports (MTRs), radiographic testing (RT) reports, repair records, and associated inspection documentation; identify and resolve discrepancies before final turnover.
- Ensure compliance with all project-specific environmental requirements.
- Inform the Chief Inspector immediately of any safety or construction deviations or anticipated problems.
Qualifications
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) through the American Welding Society with documented and verifiable work experience related to transmission/process piping and API-1104.
- A minimum of either the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) Coating Inspection Program (CIP) Level 1 Certification or Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) Basic Coatings Inspector Certification.
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
- Obtain Operator Qualification (OQ) status as required by the project.
Skills/Abilities
- Communicate clearly to other team members and client personnel.
- Write clearly and concisely to prepare reports and correspondence.
- Skilled with Microsoft Office suite.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, cross-reference, and reconcile high-volume technical documentation with a high degree of accuracy.

Pay
The hourly rate for this position is $50/hour. The starting rate will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.
Schedule
Construction Sites and Client Right-of-Way (ROW). Client testing facility (occasionally). Corporate office (occasionally).
Work Environment/Physical Demands
- Extensive driving to reach job sites and client/E2 offices.
- Frequent ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and hands and arms up in and out of pipeline bell-hole / trench/excavation.
- Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
- Lifting objects over 50 pounds from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.
- Perform visual inspection of construction crew quality of work, measuring devices, and assemble fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
- Able to perform in both inside and outside environmental conditions in all four seasons throughout the continental United States – extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit) and extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit) for more than one hour.
- Can work extended and overnight shifts without limitations.
Travel
May require extensive driving to reach job sites and client/E2 offices.
