Welder Team Lead

Job Summary

Aid in leading and coordinating fabrication workers to expedite material flow within the fabrication department, ensuring quality part production according to work instructions.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist with leading, mentoring, and developing Welder I and II.
  • Ensure personal and team safety; understand machine operation and safety protocols; perform emergency stop procedures; wear personal protective equipment.
  • Manage daily expectations to meet throughput goals for shifts.
  • Conduct daily audits of team members for procedural compliance.
  • Read and interpret job travelers, blueprints, drawings, welding procedures, and joint surface indexes.
  • Perform advanced welding machine setup and troubleshooting.
  • Master advanced grinding, gouging, and weld repair techniques.
  • Deliver and receive constructive criticism, applying lessons learned for continuous improvement.
  • Lead pre-shift safety briefings and discuss production goals.
  • Assist supervisor with project documentation accuracy.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Minimize production downtime by addressing issues promptly.
  • Maintain a respectful and professional demeanor while leading and motivating the team.
  • Promote a culture of mentoring and development.
  • Enforce company policies and procedures.
  • Drive housekeeping and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED, with successful completion of an accredited weld training program or equivalent, plus 3 or more years of NAVSEA experience.
  • Preferred: Welding Certification from an accredited program or technical program.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Pass 10 weld tests: FCAW (2G, 3G, and 4G); GWAW-Pulsed (2G, 3G, and 4G); GMAW-Spray (2G); GMAW-Pulsed Alloys (2G, 3G, and 4G).
  • Complete Pegasus Welder Workmanship Training (WWT).
  • Detailed knowledge of manufacturing welded steel products.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to build and lead high-performing teams.
  • Ability to coach and mentor the workforce in trade skills.
  • Ability to collect and present performance data for personnel decisions.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling.
  • May lift or carry up to 50 lbs. Lifting beyond this weight may require mechanical assistance.

Work Environment

  • Frequent exposure to moving machinery, airborne particles, eye protection required, fumes, machine vibrations, noise, high temperatures, and sometimes confined spaces.
  • All Keel locations are tobacco-free where applicable.
