Welder/Pipefitter Leadman - Austin Industrial - East Cap

Austin Industries is seeking a Welder Leadman to read and interpret isometric drawings, blueprints, and product specifications, and to lay out, assemble, install, and maintain pipe systems and related equipment for industrial production and processing systems.

Responsibilities

  • Cut, thread, and hammer pipe to specifications using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe threaders, and benders.
  • Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment according to specifications by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, and threading joints.
  • Attach pipes to walls, structures, and fixtures using brackets, clamps, tools, or welding equipment.
  • Inspect, examine, and test installed systems and pipelines using pressure gauges, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.
  • Measure and mark pipes for cutting and threading.
  • Lay out full-scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, and related equipment following blueprints.
  • Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair according to specifications.
  • Select pipe sizes, types, and related materials such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders.
  • Cut and bore holes in structures prior to pipe installation using hand and power tools.
  • Modify, clean, and maintain pipe systems, units, fittings, and related machines and equipment.
  • Install automatic controls used to regulate pipe systems.
  • Turn valves to shut off steam, water, or other gases or liquids from pipe sections.
  • Remove and replace worn components.
  • Prepare cost estimates for clients.
  • Inspect work sites for obstructions and structural weaknesses.
  • Operate motorized pumps to remove water from flooded areas.
  • Dip nonferrous piping materials in molten tin and lead to prevent erosion or galvanic and electrolytic action.
  • Directly supervise 1 to 5 pipe fitter helpers, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning work, appraising performance, and addressing complaints.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; or one to three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Fluent in English for safety reasons.
  • May require travel or commuting.
  • Depending on the job site, certain certificates or licenses may be required.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and vibration.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
