About the role

You will lay out, align, and weld components that are fabricated, cast, and forged to assemble structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings, and pipe, according to blueprints and metallurgy.

Responsibilities

• Select type and size of pipe or other related materials and equipment according to specifications
• Select equipment and plan layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, and welding techniques
• Use Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes as required
• Lay out, position, align, and fit components together in various body positions
• Bolt, clamp, and weld together metal components of products such as piping systems, plate, pipe, tube, or structural shapes using arc and arc gas welding equipment
• Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions; tack weld assemblies together
• Connect welding unit cables to obtain specified amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as directed
• Obtain and insert specified electrode into portable holder or thread consumable electrode wire through welding gun
• Start power supply to produce electric current and strike arc to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece
• Manually guide electrode or gun along weld-line, maintaining arc length, speed, and movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead
• Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal as needed
• Clean or degrease weld joint or workplace using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath
• Repair broken or cracked parts, fill holes, and remove excess weld, defective material, slag, and spatter
• Preheat workpiece using hand torch or heating furnace; cut metal plates or structural shapes
• Examine weld for bead size and other specifications
• Load, transport, and unload material, tools, equipment, and supplies
• Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing materials and workpieces during installation
• Perform minor maintenance or cleaning of tools and equipment
• Assist other mechanics as needed; use respiratory protection as required
• Pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards
• Perform only procedures you are certified in
• Observe and comply with all safety and project rules
• Perform other duties as requested

Requirements

• Technical Certification (company qualification tests) or NCCER preferred
• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
• Previous years of experience in the field or a related area
• Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within welding
• Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy
• Capable of certifying on multi-process pipe
• Proficient in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding processes; may require x-ray quality welds
• Make decisions based on measurable criteria
• Apply basic mathematics to solve problems
• Plan work and select proper tools
• Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings
• Compare and see differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects
