About the role

The Welder II candidate will be responsible for welding, grinding, and finishing girders or other structural aspects of our building projects. This position will utilize a “flow to the work” concept. The successful Welder II will be an excellent communicator, have exceptional follow-up capabilities, exhibit an ownership attitude, and be willing to mentor those with less skills and knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and clean work area.
  • Demonstrate basic safe work practices based on company and customer policies and procedures.
  • Attend and pass certification and licensing classroom and practical training for rolling stock, such as forklifts, scissor lifts, articulating boom lifts, etc.
  • Understand and utilize portable ladders and demonstrate proper selection of required fall protection devices.
  • Setup and calibrate welding units and tools.
  • Read and interpret blueprints to help with layout, fabrication, and welding of structural framework.
  • Clean and polish girders before welding.
  • Weld, grind, and finish the structural systems and inspect welds for integrity.
  • Complete general building repairs as assigned based on CMMS work order system.
  • Perform shift "rounds" using a checklist to document performance characteristics (i.e., operation modes, pressures, temperatures, RPM, etc.) of facility systems and equipment.
  • Communicate with site leadership or designee to ensure all aspects of a work request are understood, parts are ordered, or completion dates are updated if delayed.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on dock equipment – overhead doors, dock levelers, dock locks, and seals.
  • Ensure accurate and timely paperwork related to essential duties and responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred, or a combination of experience and training.
  • 3 or more years of mechanical experience, including iron work and welding; or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Fork truck operator’s license and JLG operator’s license preferred.
  • Experience in Stick welding, MIG welding, and TIG welding.
  • Ability to pass a visual test of welds based on client facility standards.

Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, operating and maintenance instructions, and memos.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Work in an environment requiring safety equipment such as steel toe shoes, hearing protection, noise protection, hardhat, eye protection, and hand protection.
  • Abide by OSHA guidelines including lock-out/tag-out and HAZCOM guidelines, and all other Company/Customer-driven safety initiatives.
  • Hours of work are defined and governed by business volume and contract schedules.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and remain calm in the face of customers and subordinates.
