About the Role
The Fabricator/Welder is responsible for fabricating, fitting, welding, and assembling structural steel components and custom equipment used in industrial automation systems and machinery. Working from engineering drawings and fabrication packages, this role ensures high-quality assemblies that meet Altec's standards for safety, quality, and craftsmanship. The position collaborates with engineering, production, and quality teams to transform concepts into finished products, requiring technical aptitude, attention to detail, and adaptability to unique fabrication challenges.
Responsibilities
- Fabrication & Welding
- Fabricate, fit, and weld structural steel and custom components for industrial machinery and automation systems.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication prints, weld symbols, and work instructions.
- Perform Flux Core welding as the primary process, with MIG, TIG, and Stick welding as required.
- Measure, cut, drill, grind, bevel, and prepare materials for fabrication and assembly.
- Verify proper fit-up and alignment prior to welding.
- Produce welds meeting quality standards and project specifications.
- Inspect completed assemblies for dimensional accuracy, workmanship, and structural integrity.
- Manufacturing Operations
- Operate fabrication equipment including band saws, ironworkers, drill presses, grinders, and cutting torches.
- Safely move and position fabricated assemblies using overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging equipment (where qualified).
- Collaborate with production, engineering, and quality teams to resolve fabrication challenges.
- Meet production schedules while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Identify fabrication improvements to increase efficiency without compromising workmanship.
- Safety & Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report equipment deficiencies, material concerns, and quality issues promptly.
- Participate in continuous improvement and safety initiatives.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of fabrication and welding experience in a manufacturing environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training, trade certification, or welding certification is an asset.
- Strong Flux Core welding experience is required; MIG, TIG, and Stick welding experience is an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and weld symbols.
- Experience fabricating structural steel, heavy equipment, industrial machinery, or custom equipment.
- Strong understanding of fabrication methods, welding procedures, and quality standards.
- Experience using precision measuring equipment including tape measures, squares, levels, and calipers.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position based at Altec Manufacturing Inc. in Diboll, Texas.
- Manufacturing environment with exposure to welding fumes, noise, heat, and moving equipment.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and manual material handling.
- Regular lifting of materials up to 50 pounds.
- Use of overhead cranes, forklifts, and fabrication equipment.
- Required use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
