About the role
The main responsibility of the welder will be to fabricate steel products which include a variety of ASME pressure vessels, related pressure rated and non-pressure rated accessories, and some structural items related to vessel production.
Primary Functions And Duties
- Follow and enforce strict safety regulations such as wearing safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, protective masks, and safety shoes.
- Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.
- Interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan layouts.
- Interpret typical welding symbols and apply the correct weld to workpiece.
- Use specialized machinery for industrial welding and oversee machines that perform the same job.
- Use standard hand tools and power tools for fabrication and manufacturing, i.e. grinders, hammers, drill presses, metal workers.
- Assess welded surfaces, structures, and components to identify errors.
- Set up a welding machine (both semi-auto and manual machines) to operate within the parameters of an approved WPS.
- Monitor machinery for appropriate usage and temperature.
- Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment.
- Will be required to visually inspect welds and make proper corrections without, or with minimal supervision.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess The Following
- Read blueprints
- Read and understand measurements
- Layout and fit various vessel and piping-related components.
- Operate an overhead crane
- Understand and perform welding with the following processes: GMAW (MIG), FCAW (FLUXCORE), and SAW (SUBARC)
- Must pass a drug test and background check
- Lift up to 50 lbs
- Must have pulsed MIG welding experience
Weld Test Requirements
- Candidates must pass a pipe test on super coupon, 2 7/8” dia, pipe, in the 6G position.
- The test will include an open root with a maximum 1/8” opening.
- GMAW-S will be used in the downhill direction to fill the root, followed by feathering for a hot pass using FCAW.
- FCAW 1/16" will be utilized for all passes from the hot pass to the cap in the 6G uphill position.
- Visual inspections should be performed between passes to remove slag and ensure no rollover is present.
- The cap must be completed with stringer beads, without weaving, allowing slight oscillation to manage heat and speed.
- Cap Visual Inspection Must Meet The Following Criteria:
- Maximum reinforcement: 3/16"
- No undercut exceeding 1/32"
- No cold laps, roll over, or visible imperfections at the toe of the weld
- No slag inclusion, cracks, or porosity
