Welder

About the role

Welders use engineering drawings to build parts and equipment to the specifications on the drawings. This includes lay out, tack up, welding (GMAW and GTAW processes) and straightening as required to meet dimensional and quality specifications on material thickness of 20ga to ¾″ thick material. Additional tools such as clamps, pneumatic and electrical grinders, oxy-acetylene torches, and overhead cranes are used as needed.

Responsibilities

Level 1

• Safety is a top priority in all job tasks
• Read drawings and use fixtures, templates, stops, and guides to build equipment per blueprint
• Follow verbal and written instructions from the Production Supervisor
• Measure component dimensions to verify welding accuracy
• Operate basic equipment with little supervision: pneumatic and electrical grinders, acetylene torches, plasma torches, etc.
• Lay out, tack up, and weld simple equipment and components
• Assist other welders on more complex equipment and components
• Improve consistency in weld quality and efficiency in meeting productivity expectations
• Identify and repair weld defects in accordance with quality standards

Level 2

• All Level 1 duties
• Make welds acceptable to standards for welding on arm brackets
• Recognize and apply weld symbols
• Meet productivity expectations as defined by actual hours compared against labor standards
• Demonstrate skills in using the stud gun process

Level 3

• All Level 2 duties
• Advanced blueprint reading demonstrated by acceptable completion of complex equipment
• Support screen welding
• Weld all vibratory and/or optical equipment

Level 4

• All Level 3 duties
• Work on complex assignments requiring independent action and initiative to resolve issues
• Weld all items in a particular area and be cross trained in at least one area

Level 5

• All Level 4 duties
• Demonstrated ability and interest to weld any item

Requirements

Education and/or Experience

• Level 1: High school diploma or GED; beginning computer skills; formal classes from college, trade school, or military service helpful
• Level 2: High school diploma or GED; beginning computer skills; formal classes helpful; 1.5 to 2.5 years of industrial welding experience evidenced by weld demonstration testing
• Level 3: High school diploma or GED; beginning computer skills; formal classes helpful; 2.5 to 3.5 years of industrial welding experience evidenced by weld demonstration testing
• Level 4: High school diploma or GED; beginning computer skills; formal classes helpful; 4.5 to 5.5 years of industrial welding experience evidenced by weld demonstration testing
• Level 5: High school diploma or GED; beginning computer skills; formal classes helpful; 6.5 to 7.5 years of industrial welding experience evidenced by weld demonstration testing

Language Skills

• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints, and procedure manuals
• Ability to write short routine correspondence
• Ability to speak effectively with other employees

Mathematical Skills

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

Reasoning Ability

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, blueprint, or diagram form
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls
• Frequently required to reach with hands and arms
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

Work Environment

• Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles
• Occasionally exposed to extreme heat
• Noise level in the work environment is usually loud

Safety and PPE

• Wear eye and hearing protection at all times in the manufacturing area
• Use guards on grinders and a face shield while grinding
• Wear company-provided protective clothing (coveralls or shop jackets) unless approved by management
• Wear gloves at all times while welding
• Wear all leather shoes or boots at all times

Qualifications

• High school education, community college weld program, technical weld school, or equivalent experience
• Three years’ experience in welding fabrication
• Basic GMAW and GTAW abilities
• Knowledge of gas torch and plasma equipment, overhead crane operations, and pneumatic hand tools such as grinders
• Ability to use fixtures, templates, stops, and/or guides
• Experience in MIG, TIG, and TIP/TIG welding
• Competence in reading and fully understanding manufacturing drawings
• Ability to work with minimum supervision
• Proficiency with measurements, tolerances, and both imperial and metric systems
• Position is contingent on successful completion of weld written and practical tests
