About the role

This position is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and repairing metal structures and equipment using a variety of tools and welding techniques. It requires a strong understanding of welding processes, blueprint reading, and metal fabrication methods.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-heats and cleans metals.
  • Lays out, cuts, and fits materials for welding.
  • Cut, bend, and weld metal components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment.
  • Fabricate metal structures and components according to design specifications.
  • Perform MIG, TIG, Stick (SMAW), and/or Flux-Core welding depending on project requirements.
  • Interpret and follow technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Inspect, brush, and grind welds.
  • Lays out welding work and makes simple estimates of time and material requirements.
  • Operate various hand and power tools (e.g., grinders, shears, saws).
  • Measure and inspect finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Maintain equipment and tools in safe, clean working conditions.
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Research and maintain technical competency and continuing education for their certifications, and any needed for the county's new welders to progress to their certifications.
  • Subject to working early morning, evening, weekend, and emergency events as required.
  • May be required to be on call after hours as part of a weekly rotation.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Experience: Three (3) years of welding experience. Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and/or Stick welding techniques on Steel, Copper, and Aluminum.
  • Licensure: A Class A License. Valid Texas Driver’s License and a good driving record.

Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of all tools, equipment, techniques, terminology, and materials of the welding trade, to include the cost of materials.
  • Knowledge of hazards, safety procedures, and equipment as they apply to the welding trade.
  • Knowledge of metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of basic design practices.
  • Skill in operating tools used in the welding trade, including chop saws, band saws, drill press, bench and angle grinder, welding machines, cutting torches, acetylene welding equipment, electric hand tools, standard hand tools, rotary hammers, and jack hammers.
  • Skill in operating equipment used in the welding trade, to include tractors, forklifts, versa-lifts, and high-rangers.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to make decisions and prioritize assignments.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to meet all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

Physical Demands and Environmental Exposure

  • Most assignments will be performed in an office, meeting, or operations command center environment, but some field work may be required.
  • May be required to work extended work hours during activation of disaster recovery operations for an unspecified length of time (varies based on the extent of the event).
  • This position requires bending, stooping, and lifting to 25 lbs., frequent walking, standing, sitting, reaching, and ascending/descending stairs.
