Position Summary

Welds together metal products such as structural components of ships, vessels, or other construction activity that is related to shipyard operations. Works in all kinds of weather and may be required to perform work at remote locations. Subject to various physical and environmental conditions including extreme temperatures, fumes, smoke, dust, and chemicals.

Essential Job Functions

  • Determines proper weld procedure based on blueprints, drawings, work orders, or oral instructions.
  • Uses electric or fuel burning arc welding equipment.
  • Selects and inserts appropriate electrode wire into rodholder or gun.
  • Adjusts welding unit to correct amperage or voltage settings.
  • Strikes arc to generate heat for melting and depositing metal onto workpieces.
  • Maintains length of arc and speed of movement to achieve desired depth and bead size.
  • Examines welds for proper characteristics and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Cleans weld joints or workpieces using various tools.
  • Preheats workpieces using hand torch or heating units.
  • Removes excess metal from welds using arc gougers.
  • Cuts metal plates or structural shapes using hand torches, metal shears, or metal saws.
  • Positions and clamps workpieces or assembles them on jigs or fixtures.
  • Tacks together assemblies before final welding.
  • Visually inspects welds for adherence to specifications.
  • Grinds welds or deformities as needed before completing work.
  • Performs other incidental tasks such as transporting tools, leads, structural parts, and welding supplies.
  • Operates overhead cranes and company vehicles as needed.

Essential Job Requirements

  • Education and Vocational: Must be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically. 3-5 years of welding experience required.
  • Must pass company specified performance or standards tests, including but not limited to: stick welder (plate), stick welder (pipe), flux-cored arc welder (open butt), flux-cored arc welder (fillet), flux-cored arc welder (fillet butt), short arc welder, heli arc welder, and flux-cored arc welder (pipe).
  • Must pass 3G (Vertical) and 4G (Overhead) groove welding tests.
  • Must have experience welding with 100% CO2 and working with 1" plate.
  • Must provide verifiable references of past work history.

Physical Requirements

  • Repetitive sequences requiring balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.
  • Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and 10 to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • This position is classified as heavy work.

Location

Travel to other Edison Chouest Offshore shipyards and port facilities may be required.
