Welder - 1st shift Weekends only

Under the direction of the Welding Lead, the Welder is responsible for fitting and joining, fabricating, and repairing metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques in accordance with product specifications and production schedules. Works in coordination with the Shift Supervisor and other senior management to ensure products meet job specifications and outlined requirements. Consistent production of quality UT passable welds is critical.

Responsibilities

• Perform welding duties using a wire welder
• Weld steel components with welding equipment as specified by layouts, engineering drawings, work orders, or verbal instructions
• Weld in various directions: flat and horizontal
• Perform a variety of specific welder tasks, such as set-up, laying out work using jigs/fixtures or hand layouts to fabricate parts and/or rework finished products
• Work with fitters or fitters/welders to assist in the fabrication or welding of multi-component parts
• Operate forklifts, hoists, hand power tools, slings, grinders, cutting torch, and other hand tools related to the job’s needs
• Inspect and correct welds as necessary to meet product specifications
• Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications
• Perform job-specific procedures, such as clamping, holding, tack-welding, heat bending, grinding, or bolting component parts to obtain required configurations and positions
• Read, understand, and follow job order specifications, engineering drawings, and/or work orders
• Cross-train and perform the work of other job tasks in addition to the primary assigned position
• Maintain functionality of equipment and quality of welds, including UT passable welds
• Maintain production levels as determined by supervisor
• Display a positive attitude and willingness to learn and participate in a changing environment
• Maintain production and quality of finished products
• Operate equipment safely and maintain safe working habits
• Perform a variety of other tasks as assigned
• Follow all MICA Steelworks Programs/Policies
• Practice good housekeeping (keep area clean/organized)
• Demonstrate willingness to work with others in a team environment

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• 1–2 years of welding experience
• Overhead and Jib crane experience
• Passing 2G test, T-Joint test, and Carbon Air Arc test results
• Knowledge of a variety of welder concepts, practices, and procedures
• Understanding of welding symbols, welding diagrams, blueprints, and other instructional material
• Ability to use welding equipment such as torches, torch tips, and Air Arc
• Ability to use temperature sticks and welding fillet gauges
• Ability to weld with flux core and metal core wire
• Ability to work in extreme temperatures (sometimes due to season)
• Ability to work additional hours as needed
• Good vision, hearing, smell, and balance
• Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 75 lbs
• Ability to stand, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, climb stairs, and ladders regularly
• Must wear OSHA-required PPE equipment, including an OSHA-approved welding hood when welding
• Must be able to perform work standing up for 8–10 hours per day, up to 6 days a week
• Participate in continuing education as requested or required by supervisor
• Attend mandatory education programs

Schedule

• 12-hour shift: Friday to Sunday, 5:00 AM – 3:30 PM
• Weekend full-time position
• Expected hours: 36 – 40 hours per week
