Weld Tech II

About the Role

This position performs manual and clerical duties in the Flagpole Production Department, including fabricating flagpoles and aluminum shafts, assembling components, welding, inventory management, and material handling.

Responsibilities

• Build and fabricate various types of flagpoles and aluminum shafts according to customer demand.
• Assemble parts and products from components such as brackets, eagles, and specialty items.
• Use computer systems to maintain and track production work orders (PWOs).
• Comprehend and interpret mechanical drawings, including CAD or engineering drawings.
• Weld products following the wage/learning progression outlined by the supervisor.
• Organize stock, move pallets, and put items away.
• Communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, and managers.
• Read and interpret blueprints and shop drawings.
• Visually inspect welds for compliance with standards.
• Interpret bills of materials and job orders, including part numbers and descriptions for problem-solving and inventory control.
• Operate material handling equipment such as forklifts or pallet jacks safely.
• Use raw materials from vendors, intercompany transfers, and warehouses to fabricate finished goods.
• Verify material counts against records and make necessary entries in the operating system.
• Forward paperwork to relevant departments or individuals.
• Move materials and finished goods using forklifts or pallet jacks.
• Participate in inventory and cycle count processes.
• Prepare products for shipment and verify counts against shipping documents.
• Maintain records of items taken from stock and used in production.
• Move component parts and materials to various production work centers.
• Report discrepancies in workstation materials or shipments to the supervisor.
• Perform other related duties as directed, including tasks outside the production department.
• Adhere to company safety, housekeeping policies, and work rules.
• Navigate computer systems for timekeeping and job tracking.
• Build all poles and products outlined in the progression form, including internal and external halyard flagpoles, welding hand holes, and operating machinery like the buggo machine.
• Assess inventory needs based on cycle counts.
• Complete tasks within given timeframes with minimal supervision.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED (or recognized equivalent).
• Excellent driving record.
• Ability to communicate effectively with peers, vendors, customers, purchasing, and production control.
• Proficiency in data entry and inventory control systems, including interpreting bills of materials, part numbers, and descriptions.
• Ability to operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, cranes, and yard tractors safely.

Skills

• Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one or group settings with customers, suppliers, contractors, executive staff, and co-workers via verbal/written presentations, conversations, telephone, and email.
• Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios, percentages, and perform trigonometric and geometric calculations.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Must work effectively in a team environment, contributing and supporting team activities.

Physical Demands

• Frequently required to stand for the entire shift.
• Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Specific vision abilities required include peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
• Proper lifting techniques are required.

Work Environment

• Frequently exposed to moving machinery, mechanical parts, dirt, oil, grease, metal shavings, and fumes or airborne particles.
• Occasionally exposed to extreme heat.
• Noise levels in the work environment can range from 80db to over 100db at times.
• Mandatory use of specified safety equipment (PPE) and caution while operating equipment or performing tasks in the plant.
