About the role

We seek a versatile, organized editor to oversee the weekly Iowa and the Farm Forum publication. This editor will plan, edit, and produce six Iowa weekly newspapers and the Farm Forum, a South Dakota-based agricultural publication. The role ensures consistent quality and performance of these products while providing editing support within the Des Moines newsroom and assisting with major coverage initiatives such as the Iowa State Fair, elections, and other high-volume projects. This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except Alaska, Hawaii, and Wyoming. Iowa-based candidates are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, edit, and produce six Iowa weekly newspapers and the Farm Forum publication.
  • Ensure consistent quality and performance of assigned publications.
  • Provide editing support within the Des Moines newsroom.
  • Assist with major coverage initiatives such as the Iowa State Fair, elections, and other high-volume projects.
  • Manage multiple deadlines and publications simultaneously.
  • Work collaboratively across multiple newsrooms and teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong news judgment and editing skills.
  • Excellent copy editing and headline writing abilities.
  • Experience planning, curating, and packaging content.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and publications simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing tools and audience-focused journalism.

Qualifications

  • Experience in local journalism is preferred.
  • Experience editing community, agricultural, or weekly newspapers is a plus.

Pay

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $50,500 and $78,906. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including market location, education level, skills, certifications, and experience. Variable compensation may also apply.
