About the role
As a Weekend Sports Mentor, you will engage adolescents through structured athletics, physical fitness, coaching, and positive mentoring. The primary mission is to build confidence, discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy habits in a safe residential treatment environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead structured sports instruction and recreational activities.
- Teach athletic fundamentals, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
- Develop simple lesson plans and skill-building drills.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor.
- Encourage participation, confidence, and healthy physical activity.
- Work alongside Abraxas staff to ensure resident safety and engagement.
- Lead activities including football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, conditioning, and team-building exercises.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Relevant college coursework in sports, education, psychology, or related field.
- Current NCAA student-athlete with one completed competitive season (preferred).
- Youth coaching, mentoring, officiating, or camp experience (preferred).
- Experience working with adolescents.
- Knowledge of athletic instruction and coaching.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to motivate and mentor adolescents.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a residential setting.
- Professional judgment and adaptability.
- At least twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Physical exam that includes TB and drug testing.
- Must pass both federal and state background checks which screen for crimes including, but not limited to drug-related crimes, violent crimes, sexual abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and repeated misdemeanors.
- Satisfactory completion of background screening and applicable pre-employment checks, including but not limited to employment and/or personal reference and driving records.
- Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
