About the Role

Plan, direct, and implement activity therapy programs as a component of the patient’s treatment plan.

Responsibilities

  • Complete activity assessments through patient observation and patient/family interviews to determine needs, skills, interests, and limitations for treatment plan development.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and implement activities within the treatment program to facilitate patient progress toward treatment goals.
  • Design and execute an activities program, including therapeutic leisure skills, leisure education, and leisure awareness.
  • Facilitate and lead activity sessions to enhance patient mental and physical well-being.
  • Instruct patients in activities such as sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation techniques tailored to their specific needs.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans and activity interventions that align with patient needs, interests, and treatment goals.
  • Engage patients in therapeutic activities like exercise, games, and community outings.
  • Assist patients in developing social skills necessary for independence.
  • Adapt activities to suit the needs of specific patient groups.
  • Maintain a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude toward patients, addressing complaints and prioritizing patient safety.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three or more years of experience in recreation within a healthcare setting, with knowledge of the patient population served by the facility.
  • Previous experience in healthcare recreation preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or in the process of obtaining national certification; OR certified in a specialty area (Art, Dance, Music, etc.); OR clinical professional licensure (LCPC, LPC, etc.) with certification in expressive therapy.
  • CPR, de-escalation, and restraint certification required (training available upon hire).
  • First aid certification may be required based on state or facility regulations.
