Weekend Electrician

Alta Forest Products is the world's largest producer of wood fence boards, specializing in Western Red Cedar and other premium species found in the Pacific and Inland Northwest forests. In addition to producing fence boards and pallet stock lumber, Alta's zero-wood-waste sawmills produce by-products such as wood chips, sawdust, mulch, and bio-fuel. Headquartered in Chehalis, Washington, Alta operates fence board sawmills in Morton, Shelton, and Amanda Park, Washington, and Naples, Idaho.

About the role

Journeyman Industrial Electricians are an essential part of sawmill operations, ensuring that electrical equipment is in proper working condition and that mill production is maximized. This position will assist in planning layouts, installation, and repairing wiring of electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment. The qualified candidate will hold a Journeyman’s license or equivalent. 3rd and 4th-year electrical apprentices will also be considered, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

• Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly hazardous and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
• Prepares sketches showing the location of wiring and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before the completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring.
• Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit.
• Pulls wiring through conduit.
• Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads, twisting or soldering wires, and applying tape or terminal caps.
• Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.
• Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels.
• Connects power cables to equipment, such as electric range or motor, and installs grounding leads.
• Tests circuit continuity to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.
• Observes the functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and the need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
• Repairs faulty equipment or systems.
• Cuts and welds steel structural members.
• PLC programming.
• Troubleshoots electrical issues or ways to improve mill functionality.
• Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This role may operate in a professional office, log yards, and sawmill. While performing the duties of this job, employees will be exposed to machinery and moving mechanical parts. This position will often be exposed to noise, hazards, airborne particulates, and temperature changes.

Schedule

• Full-time position, Friday through Monday, 4:00am-2:30pm.
• Overtime work may be required as projects or job duties demand.

Physical Demands

• Must be independently mobile.
• Requires the occasional use of basic hand tools.
• Requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping for extended lengths of time.
• Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including climbing and heavy lifting.
• Must be willing to work both indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.

Requirements

• Modeling, implementing, and complying with all company safety rules and industry standards.
• Utilize troubleshooting skills to assist in designing and repairing electrical systems.
• Understanding and working with:
  • Three-phase systems
  • Controls
  • Transformers
  • Temposonic linear positions
  • MCCs
  • Variable Frequency Drives
• Troubleshooting with Allen Bradley PLC processors, series 5, 500, and 5000.
• Bending and working with RMC, IMC, and EMT conduit.
• Must be able to use and interpret the NEC codebook.
• Must be 18 or older.
• Is trustworthy and self-motivated.
• Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

• Sawmill experience.
• Experience with hydraulics, welding, and pneumatics.
• Familiarity with sawmill optimization and scanning equipment.

Pay

• $40.63 per hour plus any applicable shift differential.
• Pay Differential for Swing, Graveyard, and Weekend Shifts.
