About the role
The Web Accessibility Specialist supports the University of Oregon’s commitment to digital accessibility by evaluating, guiding, and consulting on the accessibility of university websites, web-based systems, and mobile applications. This role is vital to ensuring compliance with accessibility standards and regulations, improving the user experience for individuals with disabilities, and empowering stakeholders to provide inclusive digital content.
Responsibilities
- Conduct expert technical audits of web content and mobile apps, including manual evaluations and automated scans.
- Provide expert-level training and consulting on web accessibility, best practices, and content remediation.
- Manage automated scanning tools and track compliance with accessibility standards.
- Develop and deliver tailored accessibility materials for different university audiences, including training and monitoring participation.
- Maintain web-based accessibility guidelines and best practices, collaborating with university departments, web developers, content creators, and governance groups.
- Evaluate and recommend remediation strategies for accessibility issues in documents and multimedia content.
- Engage with governance groups and stakeholders to implement accessibility improvements.
Requirements
- Basic foundation of knowledge and skills of technology and information systems obtained through an AA degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified course work in applicable fields of study.
- At least one year of related work experience.
- Ability to independently complete the essential function of evaluating all aspects of WCAG 2.1 AA compliance of web content and mobile apps.
Qualifications
- Ability to work with HTML, CSS, and ARIA to evaluate and improve accessibility in web content and applications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve accessibility barriers.
- High level of attention to detail in evaluating accessibility compliance and ensuring accuracy in reports and recommendations.
- Demonstrated commitment to digital accessibility and inclusive design to support equitable access for people with disabilities.
- Experience with enterprise web and LMS accessibility scanning tools (e.g., DubBot, PopeTech).
- Knowledge of procurement and vendor assessment for accessibility compliance in enterprise technology solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to advocate for accessibility policies and best practices at an institutional level.
Skills
- Proficiency in WCAG 2.1 AA standards and best practices for compliance.
- Experience with screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver) and other assistive technologies.
- Experience using enterprise web and LMS accessibility scanning tools (e.g., DubBot, PopeTech).
- Experience creating and delivering training or reference materials related to digital accessibility.
