About the role

The Water/Wastewater Operator (WWO) at New Mexico Water Service performs essential work in both water and wastewater operations, including the operation and maintenance of systems and equipment. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of water and wastewater systems, as well as providing customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains water systems, including wells, pumps, booster pumps, water mains, service lines, meters and meter cans, valve boxes, chlorination and treatment equipment, fire hydrants and valves
  • Operates and maintains wastewater systems including treatment facilities, well, lift stations, filters, pressure tanks, and other appurtenances and equipment
  • Utilizes equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, vactor trucks, compressors, jackhammers, tampers, tractors, and jetters
  • Maintains water and wastewater systems in compliance with state, federal, and company regulations and practices
  • Maintains and records data on gauges, dials, meters, control panels, and other instruments
  • Collects and analyzes water and wastewater samples, troubleshoots quality issues, and performs maintenance tasks
  • Performs daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on equipment, installs, repairs, and replaces mains and service lines
  • Performs fire flow testing, hydrant maintenance, locates and marks underground facilities, and performs general plant and grounds maintenance
  • Assists customers with billing, payments, conservation, and water quality inquiries, and coordinates with other operators
  • Operates centrifuge to process sludge, cleans wells with a pressure washer, and refills wasting tanks
  • Completes door hangers and distributes them to inform customers of disconnections or work taking place
  • Participates in the on-call rotation and continuous improvement programs

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year experience in a water facility desired
  • Must obtain New Mexico Water Supply Level 1 and Wastewater Level 1 certification within one year of hire
  • Must obtain New Mexico Water Supply Level 2 and Wastewater Level 2 certification within two years of hire
  • Valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver License

Qualifications

  • Available for call-outs evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Rotating on-call duty
  • Resides within 60 minutes of the NMWS office or assigned service area

  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records

$19.00 - $33.46 per hour (DOE)

Schedule
