Water Utility- Service Person I

Description of responsibilities

  • Operate, construct, and maintain the water distribution system.
  • Respond to call-outs at night and on weekends, holidays, and emergencies as required.
  • Perform excavation and restoration of streets and sidewalks as needed.
  • Operate equipment such as jackhammers, earth tampers, pumps, generators, compressors, and tapping machines.
  • Assist in laying, servicing, and repairing water mains and service lines, and perform maintenance, repair, and installation of valves, fire hydrants, water meters, and MXUs.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment (up to 200 lbs. with assistance).
  • Set up and assist with the use of rescue retrieval systems.
  • Perform customer service-related field duties, including opening/closing curb valves, meter setting/removal, special meter readings, and leak inspections.
  • Conduct fire hydrant flow testing.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of practical experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing water mains and appurtenances.
  • Experience working in construction, utilities, public works, or a related field.
  • Experience operating hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment.
  • Experience with backhoe operation preferred.

Required skills

  • Knowledge of water distribution system construction, operation, maintenance, and repair practices.
  • Ability to operate specialized industry equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports manually and using computer software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Access).
  • Ability to recognize hazards and respond appropriately to alarms and emergency situations.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including inclement weather.

Required Education

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License, Class C.
