The Bureau of Customer Services (BCS) oversees the production and collection of water and wastewater bills along with maintaining the citywide network of meters and meter reading devices, serving approximately 836,000 customers and generating $4 billion in annual revenue.
About the role
The Bureau of Customer Services seeks qualified candidates for the position of Water Use Inspector Level I, focusing on the repair, replacement, and installation of water meters and Automated Meter Reading (AMR) related equipment. Under supervision, the selected candidate will perform field and office work, including inspecting, testing, repairing, and replacing water meters and AMR equipment, as well as ensuring compliance with water supply regulations.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, test, repair, replace, and install water meters and associated equipment.
- Read water meters and remote reading devices; enter readings and condition codes into portable computers or forms.
- Test indoor meter reads to ensure water consumption is registered.
- Inspect plumbing to detect cross-connections and contamination hazards in the water supply system.
- Inspect and report on work performed by licensed plumbers or contractors to ensure compliance with departmental rules and regulations.
- Serve Inspectors Warning Notices of Violations for detected infractions of city rules, regulations, and policies.
- Testify at the Environmental Control Board as needed.
- Compute water consumption and compare it with previous periods to detect waste.
- Gather and report information related to water and sewer use, including plumbing configurations, property descriptions, and leak assessments.
- Maintain a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License for the duration of employment.
Requirements
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
- Six months of full-time satisfactory experience in one of the following:
- Helper or apprentice experience in plumbing, electrical or solar installation, construction, HVAC systems, building maintenance, pipe fitting, or steam fitting.
- Installation, assembly, or repair of water-use meters.
- Inspection, reading, and recording of data from electronic/analog meters or measuring devices in field applications (e.g., tracking water, gas, or electrical consumption).
- Graduation from an approved trade, vocational, or technical high school with a specialty in a relevant trade may substitute for the experience requirement.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, lifting heavy items, standing for prolonged periods, and working in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to work mandatory overtime, nights, weekends, and potentially Tuesday through Saturday schedules.
Qualifications
- Upon completion of two years of satisfactory service, permanent employees in Assignment Level I will advance to Assignment Level II without further examination.
- Employees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period of at least 24 months, which may be extended. Employment may be terminated during this period.
- This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability eligible for the 55-a Program.

Pay
$39,301.00 – $48,674.00 per year.
Schedule
