Water Plant Operator Trainee

About the Role

This is specialized work assisting in the operation and care of a water treatment plant during an assigned shift. Employees perform duties to ensure the water product meets quality standards set by the State health agency and the Village’s Utility Department.

Responsibilities

• Operate water plant equipment to meet quality standards and regulatory requirements.
• Collect samples for laboratory analysis.
• Take and record meter readings at regular intervals.
• Add sodium hypochlorite and other chemicals to raw water as required.
• Operate pumps and other related equipment.
• Follow established plant operating procedures; report deviations or special jobs to the Lead Operator.
• Identify, define, and repair minor equipment faults.
• Spot potential trouble spots and report them promptly.
• Perform simple and complex tests on water samples, record gauge and meter readings, and change charts as required.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
• Work effectively without close supervision and make minor decisions regarding work problems.

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
• Certification or graduation from a trade school is preferred.
• Supplemental courses in chemistry, mechanical aptitude, or related subjects may be acceptable as an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Must secure a Class “C” Water Control Operator License from the State of Florida within 12 months of employment (required for continued employment).

Skills

• Ability to read, write, and speak English.
• Good math and analytical skills.
• Ability to perform water sample tests, record data, and operate plant equipment.
