About the role

The Water Plant Maintenance Working Supervisor performs maintenance and operational duties in and around a water-treatment facility. Work involves exposure to physical hazards, environmental extremes, and hazardous materials.

Work environment

• Works near floor/wall openings, elevated platforms, runways, ladders, stairs, scaffolds, and confined spaces (e.g., manholes).
• Operates powered platforms and vehicle-mounted lifts (e.g., manlifts, fire trucks).
• Exposed to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poorly ventilated areas; noise above 85 dB (pumps, generators, power tools, lawn/garden equipment).
• Exposed to hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, and falls from heights.
• Exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather; hazardous driving conditions (e.g., snow plowing).
• Required personal protective equipment: eye/face protection, occupational head protection, occupational foot protection.
• Works with/near excavation activities, corrosives, hand/portable tools, respiratory protection, flammable/combustible liquids, portable fire extinguishers.

Physical demands: sits ~20% of shift; stands ~40%; walks ~40%; lifts/carries up to 100 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, 20 lbs constantly.

Responsibilities

• Maintains and operates water plant equipment, including pumps, chemical feeders, control systems, and plumbing.
• Performs electrical, mechanical, and electronic repairs; troubleshoots equipment malfunctions.
• Monitors gauges, dials, and indicators to ensure proper machine operation.
• Performs masonry, pipe fitting, welding, and bench/hand tool work.
• Handles material and supplies; applies herbicides under licensed supervision.
• Prepares accurate documentation; responds to routine public/official inquiries.
• Instructs and cooperates with coworkers on group projects; safeguards sensitive/confidential information.

Requirements

• Valid Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B.
• Eligible for City’s insurance provider coverage.
• Industrial vegetation license and aquatic herbicide license (Ohio Department of Agriculture).
• OEPA Water Plant Operator I Certificate.
• High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by college-level maintenance-related coursework.
• One year of experience in water plant maintenance/operation, electrical equipment/wiring, control system maintenance, and plumbing; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
