Water Fitness Instructor (Jamaica YMCA)

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a high degree of member service through a professional relationship with the members regarding their needs, concerns, and questions about the YMCA, its programs, and mission.
  • Demonstrate YMCA Values and understand the YMCA Mission.
  • Instruct safe and effective water fitness classes that meet the needs of all participants, modifying routines as necessary according to the fitness level of class participants.
  • Be prepared to teach in the water and on deck. Incorporate different types of equipment and creative choreography into class.
  • Show knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and their relationship to the development of water fitness instruction.
  • Show understanding of the physics of water resistance and its effects on participant movement.
  • Maintain required personal certifications.
  • Show knowledge of current Health & Wellness/Aquatics programs and trends.
  • Notify the supervisor and find appropriate coverage for class due to illness or emergency.
  • Be on time and in uniform (swimsuit, ID, etc.) for all scheduled classes.
  • Maintain attendance records of classes.
  • Attend training opportunities necessary for the position.
  • Participate in training sessions and designated meetings.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in a related field.
  • Current CPR/AED certifications.
  • YMCA Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent.
  • YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certification or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain the Y Aquatics Safety Assistant certification within ninety (90) days of hire, or have a lifeguard certification.
  • Knowledge of YMCA Principles of Health & Fitness, Working with Older Adults, Older Adult Water Fitness Instructor, and the Arthritis Foundation.
  • Excellent customer service and communications skills.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
