About the role
This posting is for one open position as a Water Distribution Operator I or II, with the level offered dependent on the candidate’s qualifications. The role involves maintaining and operating a water distribution system, including customer interactions and emergency response.
Responsibilities
- Learn and perform tasks related to the maintenance and operation of a water distribution system, including the use of tools and equipment.
- Install, repair, and replace water mains, services, valves, fire hydrants, and water meters under direction.
- Interact with customers and represent the company in field activities.
- Perform basic customer support for installation, modification, service, and repair of water distribution equipment.
- Locate water mains and service lines.
- Conduct routine maintenance such as system flushing, valve exercising, and fire hydrant maintenance.
- Inspect and test equipment, recording accurate details of working order.
- Perform fire flow tests and record data.
- Notify customers of scheduled and emergency outages.
- Develop and implement shutdowns of the water distribution system for planned and emergency work.
- Operate heavy machinery, including dump trucks and backhoes.
- Follow safe-work practices, including traffic control, personal protective equipment, trench shoring, hazardous materials handling, confined space, and electrical safety.
- Perform meter reads, turn-ons/offs, and field investigations.
- Conduct collection activities for delinquent accounts.
- Operate company vehicles and equipment according to safety procedures.
- Prepare daily logs and reports on work performed.
- Available for after-hours work and emergency response, 24/7.
- Must reside within 25 miles of the nearest water system boundary for emergency response.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- General PC skills.
- Good communication (written and verbal) and organizational skills.
- Valid California driver license.
Qualifications
Water Distribution Operator I
- No certification required.
Water Distribution Operator II
- SWRCB Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate.
- Two years as a Water Distribution Operator I or equivalent experience in the water utility industry.
