About the role
The Water Bacteriologist Chemist (WBC) is assigned to the Water Supply & Treatment Division and provides critical analytical services and technical support to City of Dayton departments and water customers. This position requires thorough knowledge of Federal EPA and Ohio EPA regulations, laboratory methods, and certification requirements to ensure compliance with all applicable drinking water standards.
Responsibilities
- Performs chemical, bacteriological, and physical analyses of groundwater, surface water, treatment process samples, lime residuals, and distribution system samples.
- Conducts sampling activities; prepares reagents, standards, calibration curves, glassware, and sample containers; calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation; implements analytical method modifications as needed.
- Produces accurate, reliable, and clearly documented test results for operational, regulatory, and customer service purposes while maintaining laboratory certification standards.
- Assists with laboratory research projects, evaluates and interprets analytical data, and converts laboratory findings into meaningful information that supports water quality monitoring and treatment operations.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental or Physical Science or closely related field AND one year of experience in laboratory work performing chemical / bacterial sampling and testing of water.
- Two years of academic laboratory coursework in the scientific field of study may substitute for one year of experience if degree was obtained within the past 12 months.
- Must meet the following:
- Within 3 months of appointment, must acquire and maintain interim Ohio EPA authorization in Wet Chemistry and MMO-MUG Microbiology testing for water.
- Within 6 months of appointment (or by the earliest available OEPA laboratory survey date), must acquire and maintain full Ohio EPA certifications in Wet Chemistry and Microbiology Testing for water.
- Within 18 months of appointment, must obtain an Ohio EPA Water Supply Operator Class I or higher certification.
- Within 3 years of receiving an Ohio EPA Water Supply Operator Class I, the incumbent must obtain an Ohio EPA Water Supply Operator Class II certification and maintain as a condition of employment.
Qualifications
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

- Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing: Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Pay
$62,545.60 - $84,052.80 per year
