Role Purpose
The Utilities Supervisor is responsible for supervising, leading, and ensuring the safety of technical teams performing planned and unplanned maintenance within the Utilities Department. This role oversees Plant Utilities Technicians responsible for the operation, maintenance, and reliability of critical utility systems, including the wastewater treatment plant, well water and RO systems, boilers, refrigeration and chilled water systems, air compressors, CO₂ recovery, nitrogen generation, water distribution, wastewater collection systems, injection wells, and all associated controls. The Utilities Supervisor also manages the materials and supplies required to operate and maintain these systems.
Accountabilities & Impact
- Supervises and advises the activities of staff including work assignment, performance evaluation, and employee development;
- Participates in employee selection, disciplinary action, and resolving team member concerns;
- Schedules, coordinates, and provides field supervision of staff involved in maintenance and construction activities of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, water meter reading, water service and meter replacements, installations, and utilities customer services;
- Orders maintenance materials and supplies;
- Prepares work plans for the maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems;
- Maintains records and prepares reports;
- Provides input for and assists in the preparation of performance evaluations of assigned subordinate personnel;
- Aid in the development of departmental standard operating procedures and emergency response policy and procedures for utility maintenance operations;
- Provide for the training of assigned personnel in work methods, use of tools and equipment, and safety practices;
- Aid in developing product specifications and in maintaining effective working and liaison relationship with purchasing operations.
Skills & Experiences Needed
- 2-5 years validated experience in a supervisory or leadership role as it relates to plant utilities;
- Associates degree or higher in utilities related field (combination experience/education);
- Wastewater certifications, boiler certification, or refrigeration certification are a plus;
- Skilled with the proper use of power and hand tools, forklift experience is helpful;
- Experience using a CMMS system for scheduling and planning maintenance activities;
- Experience using MS Office products such as Excel, Word, and Outlook, or similar software.
Working Conditions
- This position is exposed to occupational hazards, including but not limited to, high noise levels, physical obstacles, exposure to chemicals, etc.
- Exposed to the outside conditions, for short periods of time.
- Subject to extreme heat/cold temperatures.
- Must have sufficient endurance to perform tasks over long periods of time.
- Fast-paced and constantly changing work environment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand/move 8-12 hours per day.
- Ability to ascend/descend stairs/ladders throughout shift.
- Fine motor skills and dexterity for manipulation.
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including (but not limited to) bump cap, safety steel toe shoes, safety glasses, dust masks or PAPRs.
- Must adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
- This position has been identified as a safety sensitive position within the state of Arizona.
