About the role

The Wastewater Supervisor position is available at Smithfield, a company dedicated to sustainable food production. This role involves overseeing wastewater operations, ensuring compliance with permits, and managing a team of operators and technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage wastewater operations to achieve high-quality final effluent and full compliance with regulatory permits.
  • Minimize system upsets through regular monitoring, reduce operating costs, and ensure equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain communication with municipal utilities staff, manage inventory and waste, prevent spills, and monitor sludge land application processes and contractor performance.
  • Collaborate with facility management and wastewater operations to ensure timely completion of duties.
  • Lead and coach a team of wastewater operations and technicians.
  • Drive a positive employee experience through leadership, employee development, and coaching.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental, health and safety or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience acting as a lead, providing training, coaching, or mentoring to less experienced staff or managing processes/projects.
  • Grade 4 Wastewater certification (or acquire within 18 months).
  • Class I Water License (or acquire within 2 years).
  • Experience handling multiple assignments simultaneously, setting goals, and completing commitments on schedule.
  • Occasional travel to collaborate with others.

Qualifications

  • Experience operating DAF units, anaerobic lagoons, activated sludge, and clarifiers is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of wastewater chemistry and math skills for wastewater calculations.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and company software packages.
  • Effective communication skills for drafting reports, business correspondence, and procedures in English.
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to respond to questions from a diverse audience.
  • Organizational skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Respectful, approachable, and team-oriented demeanor for fostering robust working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Skills

  • Prior experience operating Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) units, anaerobic lagoons, activated sludge, and clarifiers is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of wastewater chemistry (BOD, solids, pH, metals).
  • Basic math skills to manage Key Performance Indicators.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for drafting reports, business correspondence, and procedures in English.
  • Effective presentation skills and ability to respond to questions from a diverse audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and have strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable, and team-oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
