About the role
The Police Recruit position is a civilian classification designed to prepare potential Police Officer candidates for the police academy. Under close supervision, recruits undergo a comprehensive training program covering police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, and physical/emotional skills necessary for academy success.
Responsibilities
- Learn and apply knowledge of Sacramento Police Department’s organization, chain of command, and rules and regulations.
- Develop understanding of community service, crime prevention, and appropriate behavior.
- Acquire knowledge of enforcement and procedural aspects of criminal law and legal obligations.
- Receive training in and practice effective and professional communication.
- Learn to recognize vehicle violations and safely contact violators.
- Participate in basic criminal investigation processes and techniques.
- Learn and practice physical fitness and defense techniques.
- Learn and practice first-aid, including CPR.
- Assist in routine investigations, preparing non-injury police reports, responding to fire alarms, street hazards, and found property calls.
- Assist in traffic and non-violent crowd control duties.
- Transport citizens, personnel, and equipment as directed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 17 1/2 years of age by test date (must be 18 by appointment).
- Enrolled in at least 12 semester units at an accredited college or university with a 2.0 GPA.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of modern police work, state laws, City ordinances, first-aid, and the City’s geography.
- Write clearly, accurately, and professionally.
- Read and interpret complex technical documents.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Observe, assimilate, remember, record, and recall pertinent facts and details.
- Analyze problems and take effective action in emergency and stress situations.
- Plan and effectively present material orally to diverse groups.
- Deal courteously but firmly with the general public.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Able to undergo strenuous physical conditioning.
Special Qualifications
- Age: At least 17 1/2 years of age by test date (must be 18 by appointment).
- Felony convictions: Must be free of felony convictions under California Government Code Section 1029.
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien eligible for and have applied for citizenship.
- Driver License: Must possess a valid Class C Driver License at the time of appointment.
- Medical/Drug Test/Psychological: Must pass a medical examination, drug test, and psychological test.
- Background: Must pass a background investigation, including a criminal history check, fingerprinting, polygraph test, credit check, and drug use history.
- Respiratory Protective Equipment: Required to wear respiratory protective equipment at times.
