Wastewater Maintenance Specialist I

Pima County’s Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department is hiring an entry-level Wastewater Specialist I. Responsibilities

• Performs repairs and routine maintenance of industrial wastewater pumps, pumping systems, industrial electrical systems, instrumentation, and power generating engines.
• Assists Wastewater Mechanics, Instrumentation Specialists, and Trades Maintenance Specialists and Technicians in non-routine maintenance, repairs, and construction of assigned facilities and systems.
• Assists Wastewater Mechanics in the repair and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater conveyance systems.
• Assists other journey-level trade workers, such as painters, welders, electricians, and instrumentation technicians.
• Assists specialists/technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of specialized equipment or controls.
• Lifts and moves heavy materials, tools, and supplies.
• Uses and maintains safety and personal protective equipment.
• Performs operator-level maintenance, servicing, and adjustments of common tools and equipment.
• Performs worksite clean-up following completion of jobs.

Requirements

• One year of experience working in industrial mechanical maintenance and repair, pumping systems, instrumentation, process control, electrical systems, or power generation engine maintenance. (Automotive, truck, or heavy equipment maintenance does not qualify.)
• OR one year of experience with Pima County as a Maintenance Mechanic, Utility Service Worker I, Trades Maintenance Helper, or Trades Maintenance Technician in roles other than automotive, truck, or heavy equipment repair and/or maintenance.
• Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid Arizona driver license is required at time of appointment.
• Successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine suitability to operate county vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum one year of experience with mechanical equipment, performing repairs and routine maintenance of pumping systems, pumps, gear boxes, plumbing, pipe fitting, and compressor/blower maintenance.
• Experience with or knowledge of maintenance repair, preventative maintenance, diagnosing, or troubleshooting in wastewater, construction, or fabrication.
• Experience with or knowledge of using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Experience with or knowledge of using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook).

Physical and Sensory Requirements

• Constantly operates and inspects mechanical equipment.
• Frequently positions self to use, inspect, clean, or repair tools and machinery.
• Frequently observes details at close range and exchanges accurate information.
• Frequently remains in a stationary position and moves tools/equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Frequently operates a motor vehicle or golf cart safely and legally.
• Occasionally moves tools and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs.
• Occasionally ascends/descends machinery and equipment to repair or service.
• Frequently ascends and descends ladders and stairs to reach elevated or below-grade work platforms.
• Frequently required to lift, push, or pull objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
• Frequently exposed to bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching, squatting, and stooping.
• Frequently engages in grasping motions and speaking in person, on the phone, or on the radio.
• Frequently works in noisy areas, with equipment alarms, or behind themselves.
• Vision requirements include operating a motor vehicle, distinguishing colors, depth perception, and peripheral vision. May require a CDL or operation of a forklift/power industrial equipment.

Working Conditions

• Some positions may require an on-call rotation.
• Constantly exposed to loud noise levels and moving mechanical parts.
• Occasionally exposed to mechanical oils, vibration, and risk of electrical shock.
• Working with or in the presence of obnoxious odors, noxious or potentially hazardous chemicals, compounds, or products.
• Constantly exposed to extreme heat and occasionally requires confined space entry.
• Exposure to various weather conditions and walking on uneven or slippery surfaces.

Pay

Hiring range: $21.76 - $25.56 per hour. Full pay range: $21.76 - $29.36 per hour. The hiring range is an estimate; actual salary offers consider skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
