About the role

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is the state's largest hunger relief organization and one of the leading food banks in the Feeding America Network. In addition to vital hunger relief programs in our 21-county service area, we also operate Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative for Feeding America, serve as a contract reclamation site for Kroger Central Division, and are a staging site for FEMA disaster response.

Position purpose

The Warehouse Associate will predominantly work wherever needed throughout the Distribution Center, including tasks such as loading and unloading shipments, putting away finished Production inventory, fulfilling orders from the dry warehouse area, executing smooth receipt when receiving product, inventory, replenishing product in pick bins, and order fulfillment with accuracy in all activity. The Warehouse Associate will work with other staff members and customers to include Freezer needs, Cooler needs and Janitorial needs daily. All responsibilities and duties will further Gleaners' mission to be a leader in the fight against hunger.

Essential functions

  • Pick orders using a riding pallet jack and a scan gun, load outbound semis and box trucks, and use a forklift to bring product down in the racking for the next day's orders
  • Perform various warehouse functions including: replenishment, order-fulfillment (by both case and pallet quantities), prepare product for distribution (including wrapping pallets and labeling orders), and ship product to the endpoint destination
  • Take direction as indicated by multiple sources: document, scanner or other instruction
  • Keep your workstation clean
  • Change tasks and assignments as the needs of our Distribution Center require
  • Work safely and accurately with minimal supervision
  • Operate PIT equipment according to Gleaners and OSHA guidelines
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to all food safety guidelines according to GFB, Feeding America, AIB, USDA, ISDH and any other applicable processes or regulations for safe and sanitary production and storage of all products
  • All other duties as assigned

Education and experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Prior experience in customer service is desired
  • Knowledge and experience performing warehouse functions (safety procedures, product receipt, put-away, replenishment, inventory, order-fulfillment and shipment, etc.)

  • Ability to read, write and to understand instructions
  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with all staff members, agencies, volunteers, and donors
  • Ability to perform basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
  • Ability to count accurately and maintain accurate records
  • Understands warehouse inventory
  • Being able to identify good vs. bad produce
  • Be accountable and meet deadlines on a consistent basis
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Powered Industrial Truck (PIT, pallet jack, forklift, etc.) certification and experience preferred (or ability to be certified)
  • Works well with others and independently
  • Demonstrated ability to discharge the Essential Functions of the position as set forth above

Work environment & physical demands

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to lift and/or move 50 lbs. regularly and to push/pull 2,000 lbs. of product using manual and/or electric pallet jack
  • Ability to speak clearly
  • Ability to operate machine, mechanical, and electrical equipment
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Warehouse/Distribution Environment
  • This position is predominantly in the dry section of our warehouse with some activity in refrigerated and freezer environments
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • Hot/Cold Environment and exposure to fumes/odors and dirt/dust
  • Some exposure to outdoors (i.e. all-weather conditions) and the office
  • Constant movement of vehicles and equipment; Machinery/equipment in use
  • Requires movement of product in-and-out of trailers and straight trucks
  • Flexible work schedule, including ability to work Saturday and evening hours as needed
