Warehouse Material Handler and Driver

About the role
This Material Handler/Driver position is for a new store in Bismarck, ND. The role involves receiving, filling, and shipping products accurately and efficiently, as well as ensuring the safe transport and timely arrival of products to customers and other store locations. This role may include various warehouse functions such as receiving, order fulfillment, product picking, wrapping and packing, stock replenishment, customer will call, and inventory cycle counts.
Responsibilities
- Operate basic power equipment (e.g., electric pallet, walkie rider, sit-down forklift) safely and efficiently to locate, put away, stack, and move products.
- Receive product by unloading trucks using forklift, pallet jack, electric pallet jack, or by hand.
- Ensure shipments received are in good condition and accurate by inspecting freight, verifying quantities, checking packing lists, and completing necessary paperwork.
- Verify bar code labels and readable Johnstone stock numbers by scanning products, printing labels, and resolving discrepancies.
- Fill orders by picking, packing items into cartons, and stacking them to minimize damage; enter items into scan gun and complete necessary paperwork.
- Document shipment of hazardous materials by labeling cartons correctly and completing necessary paperwork.
- Prepare orders by palletizing, wrapping, loading pallets into trucks, and completing necessary paperwork.
- Maintain current accuracy and efficiency standards and follow all standard operating procedures.
- Participate in inventory cycle counts and related projects.
- Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of warehouse machinery and equipment.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following safety rules and reporting concerns.
- Wear protective equipment according to company policies and access Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) as needed.
- Maintain required certifications (e.g., hazardous materials, forklift).
- Maintain professional communications with customers and coworkers.
Driving Responsibilities
- Maintain positive relationships with customers by providing exceptional service and accurate, timely delivery of products.
- Serve as a key field contact for gathering accurate customer service and delivery expectations.
- Safely operate company vehicles and equipment consistent with DOT, state, federal, and company standards.
- Maintain cleanliness of the truck, cab, box, and assigned work areas.
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned vehicles/equipment; report defects or repair needs promptly.
- Load and unload trucks; verify deliveries against sales and transfer orders.
- Prepare routes and follow schedules/deadlines for delivery, shipping, receiving, and related tasks.
- Drive straight body vehicles (e.g., box truck) to deliver supplies and equipment to customers or other Johnstone locations.
- Maintain communication with supervisor for expedited delivery instructions.
- Immediately communicate delivery, traffic, safety, or customer issues to supervisor.
- Record sales/delivery information; complete manifests with pictures, signatures, and returns via iPad or manual methods.
- Return vehicle at the end of the day, ensuring it is fully fueled; complete monthly driver logs and associated paperwork.
- Return gas receipts, monies, vehicle inspection logs, and other necessary paperwork.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record acceptable to the company; must remain eligible to drive a commercial motor vehicle under applicable laws.
- 1+ years of truck driving experience (26 ft vehicle or larger) or 1 year operating Johnstone equipment/vehicles under supervision.
- Experience operating forklift and other warehouse equipment safely and competently.
- Forklift certification required, or willingness to obtain on the job.
- Ability to utilize necessary technology (e.g., GPS, mobile Proof of Delivery devices, RF equipment, ERP software).
- Ability to read maps and mapping applications accurately.
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and maneuver large/heavy products or equipment within safety guidelines.
- Familiarity with warehouse or distribution center management systems and order picking processes.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to maintain professional relationships.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; English proficiency is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- 6+ months of experience in a warehouse and/or distribution facility, preferably in HVAC/R or related field.
- Experience with a picker, RF scanner, and inventory management systems.
- Knowledge of HVAC wholesale industry, principles, and practices.
- Previous experience with OSHA and safety regulations and procedures.
