About the Role
Scholastic Book Fairs hosts more than 127,000 book-sale events annually, providing over 35 million students and families access to educational products. We are seeking Warehouse Powered Equipment Operators to support our local branch team. This part-time, seasonal position requires proficiency in operating powered equipment while meeting productivity and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Operate battery-operated and/or gas-powered equipment (e.g., forklifts, stock pickers, reach trucks, sit-down/stand-up counterbalanced trucks) to transport products within the facility.
- Follow all power equipment rules and regulations, including OSHA policies, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lanyards and harnesses.
- Perform scanner functions, including cycle counts, replenishment, item inquiries, and inventory put-away.
- Ensure safe and neat stacking of products in rack or staging locations while maintaining inventory accuracy.
- Inspect and assist in equipment maintenance; report unsafe conditions to management.
- Handle merchandise carefully to avoid damage, bending, or tearing.
- Participate in Physical Inventory and Customer Appreciation Warehouse Sale events.
- Meet minimum production, accuracy, or quality standards.
- Assist in processing returned book fairs by unpacking metal cases, boxes, and displays according to corporate procedures.
- Pick and pack customer reorders as needed.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Perform seasonal inventory production-line resets individually or with coworkers.
- Assist in loading and unloading trucks, with or without mechanical devices.
- Utilize warehouse equipment and tools properly to enhance productivity, efficiency, and safety; report unsafe conditions or injuries immediately.
- Use proper techniques for lifting, packing, and handling heavy objects.
- Complete Labor Data Collection Cards accurately and on time.
- Maintain attendance and punctuality according to the assigned schedule and company standards.
- Maintain courteous and positive relationships with coworkers and customers.
- Comply with the company’s drug and alcohol-free policy.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Trained and licensed to operate power equipment; minimum 1 year of experience for external candidates.
- Satisfactory completion of a forklift training program.
- Basic proficiency with product scanners (e.g., ordering replenishment) with minimal errors.
- Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate with coworkers.
- Good verbal/written communication skills, basic math skills, and ability to read documents in English (e.g., safety rules, operating instructions).
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Physical Demands
- Lift boxes weighing up to 50 lbs occasionally on a daily basis.
- Stand, reach above/below shoulders, squat, bend, and kneel as necessary.
- Work in a non-air-conditioned environment.
- Complete and maintain certification for powered industrial equipment.
- Pass initial and random drug screens; remain drug-free.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for assigned tasks.
