About the role

The Underwriting Manager is responsible for processing new complex credit requests and extending existing credit facilities. They analyze, underwrite, and recommend decisions on credit requests, assist in monitoring and managing the credit portfolio, and provide consultative underwriting advice.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a team leader overseeing credit underwriting activities to minimize credit losses.
  • Oversees the work of other relationship and/or portfolio managers in preparing "Concept Memos" and "Loan Proposals."
  • Trains less-experienced credit staff and allocates work assignments based on experience and monitors progress.
  • Assists in assessing credit needs of clients and prospects, developing credit solutions, and providing consultative underwriting advice.
  • Takes primary responsibility for providing credit analysis and ongoing monitoring to meet customer needs and minimize credit losses.
  • Identifies, classifies, and monitors problem or potential problem loans in compliance with internal credit review policy.
  • Performs portfolio reporting on an ad hoc and quarterly basis for senior management, including asset concentrations and refinancing ability analysis.
  • Interacts with Credit Administration, Appraisals, Legal, and other related Bank personnel regarding credit quality, appropriate compensation for risk, and new business trends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, or other related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of banking, underwriting, and credit experience, or other directly related experience.
  • 3-5 years of underwriting commercial loans.
  • 3-5 years of experience managing a team to include training, onboarding, hiring, coaching/mentoring, performance management, and career development.

Qualifications

  • Ability to analyze financial statements, tax returns, and collateral.
  • Excellent knowledge of commercial lending policies, procedures, practices, and documentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and managerial skills.
