About the role

In coordination with Chief Underwriter and VP, Technical Underwriting, this role leads, manages, and directs the development and compliance of financial and medical underwriting standards, policies, and procedures that drive USIM's philosophy and sound approach to underwriting. The position underwrites large risk facultative cases, manages client relationships, and ensures alignment with corporate business strategies and vision. Serves as a key member of the US Facultative leadership team, providing strategic direction and fostering cooperation among all work areas.

Responsibilities

  • Appraises and underwrites USIM’s largest risks for life insurance with unlimited approval authority.
  • Exercises full authority to make exceptions to guidelines and rules to preserve client relationships while maintaining RGA Re philosophy and profitable business.
  • Develops and manages client relationships by providing expert underwriting solutions, identifying creative problem-solving approaches, and effectively communicating and negotiating underwriting decisions.
  • Acts as USIM’s primary contact for retro companies and maintains USIM’s reputation in auto and facultative pool arrangements.
  • Reviews, co-signs, and/or gives second opinions on COLI/BOLI underwriting; mentors, educates, and trains underwriters in COLI/BOLI and financial underwriting.
  • Leads the Large Case Unit (LCU), performs management responsibilities, and provides development and rotational opportunities for team members.
  • Provides leadership and underwriting expertise to management, team members, actuarial, business development, and external clients.
  • Ensures adequate underwriting support for large case review and provides training opportunities for less experienced underwriters.
  • Performs selected facultative case claims analysis and review and supports audits; reviews potential jumbo violations on inforce cases and collaborates with clients, retrocessionaires, and internal stakeholders to ensure resolution.
  • Represents RGA Re at industry meetings and exercises influence with customers, competitors, and retrocessionaires.
  • Fosters a positive and engaged work environment; mentors associates and guides associate development.
  • Serves as a member of the US Facultative Underwriting leadership team, setting strategic and tactical direction, division goals, and development of joint plans to achieve objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) or equivalent related work experience (minimum 8 years).
  • BS/BA in Science or Business preferred.
  • 15+ years of reinsurance or direct underwriting experience.
  • 20+ years of reinsurance underwriting experience preferred.
  • ACS, ALU, FLMI, FALU, or CLU accreditation or progress toward accreditation preferred.
  • Intermediate Word, SQL/Query, and Excel skills.
  • Highly advanced ability to comprehend and interpret insurance and contract documents.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of broad business practices.
  • Highly advanced persuasion skills when working with internal partners and external customers.
  • Expertise in implementing change and ensuring understanding, participation, and ownership.
  • Highly advanced investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional skills in managing multiple tasks, projects, and/or sub-teams simultaneously.
  • Expertise in translating business needs and problems into viable solutions.
  • Expert ability to analyze and improve business processes.
  • Highly advanced project management skills, including evaluating project objectives, scheduling resources, and managing budgets.
  • Exceptional ability to make timely and effective decisions and produce results through strategic planning.

Pay

Compensation Range: $150,770.00 - $224,640.00 Annual

Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location. RGA provides an annual bonus plan for all roles, and some positions are eligible for participation in the long-term equity incentive plan. RGA also maintains a full range of health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
