Volunteers
Must be 18 years of age or older. For unsupervised student interactions, must be fingerprinted and complete required workshops. Other requirements may be necessary, depending on the volunteer assignment.
About the Role
A Volunteer assists with programs, events, and activities organized by the PTA, school, or classroom teacher to support student success. Volunteers work cooperatively as reliable team members to complete assignments, understand ethical and legal responsibilities, and maintain strict confidentiality regarding student records, students, and school personnel.
Volunteers may be parents/guardians, community members, senior citizens, or upper-grade students whose participation supports a PTA or school program, activity, or event. Time commitment varies based on availability, ranging from one-time assignments to monthly, weekly, or daily activities.
Responsibilities
- Tutoring and mentoring students
- Supervising lunchrooms and playgrounds
- Assisting in a class, library, or school office
- Sharing a special skill or occupation to enrich classroom learning
- Preparing materials or assisting with a PTA or school program, activity, or event
- Assisting in co-curricular after-school activities
Getting Started
Preparation: Find out about volunteer opportunities by checking PTA and school newsletters, websites, and social media. Sign up for assignments that fit your interests, availability, and skill sets.
Before an assignment:
- Add the day and time to your calendar.
- If unable to participate, contact the organizer in advance so another volunteer can be recruited.
- Arrive early to sign in at the school office before heading to the activity or event.
During an assignment:
- Review the volunteer job details with the organizer and ask clarifying questions (e.g., roles, breaks, expectations).
- For larger events, be prepared to assist flexibly where needed.
After an assignment:
- Provide feedback to organizers to improve programs, activities, or events.
- Attend volunteer recognition events and sign up for future opportunities to stay connected.
