The City of Tacoma Police Department seeks volunteers to serve on the Police Officer Interview and Selection Committee (POISC). This is a non-paid, volunteer position.

About the role

This committee helps select new Tacoma Police officers by evaluating candidates through an oral board/interview process. Candidates must first pass a physical abilities test, written exam, and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with candidates to learn more about them and assess their suitability for the role of police officer.
  • Participate in the selection process, consisting of interviewing up to five candidates each day.
  • Ensure fairness and impartiality in the evaluation process.
  • Respectfully evaluate candidates' responses from a law enforcement perspective.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to a binding confidentiality agreement.

Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a resident of the City of Tacoma or work within its limits.
  • Satisfactorily pass a department/agency background check.
  • Affirm their availability and commitment to serve for at least one calendar year.
  • Attend mandatory training.
  • Participate in the oral board/interview process.

  • Commitment to confidentiality and willingness to sign a binding confidentiality agreement.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound and thoughtful decisions.
  • Proven ability to maintain high standards of ethics and integrity.

Schedule

POISC members are expected to be available on weekdays between the hours of 0900-1130 or 1200-1430, on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. They are expected to serve one day per month in a rotation with other community members on the list. If available more often, they can sit on interviews more frequently.
