VOLUNTEER: Nature Center Docent

About the Role

The City of San Marcos' Parks and Recreation Department is seeking volunteers for the Nature Center Docent program at the Jack's Pond Nature Center. This is an opportunity for nature enthusiasts to help educate visitors about local habitat and engage in nature-inspired activities.

Jack's Pond Nature Center is a renovated barn near Cal State San Marcos featuring 10 themed rooms with activities and information about local flora and fauna. As a docent, you will oversee the nature center on Sundays from 10am–1pm (at least one day per month) and participate in other duties as assigned.

Docents may also assist with city-related events, school field trips, and additional educational programs.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the nature center on Sundays from 10am–1pm (minimum one day per month).
• Engage visitors with nature-inspired activities and information about local flora and fauna.
• Assist with city-related events and school field trips to the nature center.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• At least 18 years of age at the time of volunteer assignment.
• Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Available for consistent, ongoing volunteer commitment.
• Enjoys working with the public and sharing a passion for nature and recreation.
• Available to volunteer in person on Sundays from 10am–1pm.

Qualifications

To become a Nature Center Volunteer:

• Complete and submit an online application.
• Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an in-person interview.
• Selected volunteers will undergo a background check and pre-volunteer physical.
