This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections. We need an independent CPA Financial Review Report to fulfill our mandatory New York State charitable solicitation compliance (Form CHAR500) for our 2024 and 2025 tax years. Our gross revenue crossed New York's $250,000 threshold due to large fiscal sponsorship pass-through grants, making a formal, limited-assurance financial review a strict statutory requirement to maintain our legal fundraising status. Specific Tasks for the Volunteer: We need an independent, licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to: - Review Prepared Statements: Examine our pre-compiled 2024 and 2025 financial packets - Conduct Standard Procedures: Perform the limited analytical procedures and inquiries standard for a non-profit financial review - Issue the Report: Draft and sign a formal Independent Accountant’s Review Report that complies with New York Charities Bureau rules. Why This Fits the 2–5 Hour Weekly Commitment: This project requires very little active time because we are not asking for bookkeeping, cleanup, or data entry. Our books are 100% clean, reconciled, and professionally managed by a national compliance firm (Foundation Group). We will hand you pristine 2024 and 2025 Balance Sheets, Statement of Activities, and Ledger on Day 1. A skilled CPA can easily complete the analysis and issue the report within a total of 3 to 6 hours max, making it a perfect low-hour, high-impact project. Our volunteer-led organization is at a critical, harrowing crossroads. This past year, as the Executive Director who single-handedly runs our operations, I faced a severe personal battle with Thyroid cancer. While recovering, our organization suffered a catastrophic financial blow this past May 2026 when our anchor sponsor pulled out just one week before our largest event at the Cannes Film Festival, costing us over $50,000 dollars in vital funding. We currently have less than $300 dollars in our bank account, are behind on bills, and have had to pause our core programming. While our annual gross revenue looks high, it is because we act as a fiscal sponsor passing major grants through to independent filmmakers, taking only a minimal 2.5% fee, meaning we have no operational cash to pay for a commercial CPA. By donating your credentials for just a few hours, you will single-handedly rescue our organization from a legal compliance bottleneck and unlock our ability to legally resume fundraising and secure new grants in New York State. This project is the exact key we need to restart our paused programs, rebuild our funding, and allow us to continue championing the independent filmmakers who rely on our fiscal sponsorship and mentorship programs to bring their stories to life. We have taken every step to ensure this project is turn-key for our volunteer partner. Our organization retains Foundation Group, a premier national non-profit bookkeeping and compliance agency. They have fully managed, reconciled, and locked our 2024 and 2025 financial data. We have already requested the final 2024 Balance Sheet, Statement of Activities (Income Statement), and General Ledger from our project coordinator there, and these immaculate files will be ready to hand to you immediately upon matching. Implementation Strategy: as the Executive Director, I am fully bought into this project and will be your direct point of contact. Once you deliver the signed Financial Review Report, I will pass it directly back to our coordinator at Foundation Group. They will handle 100% of the actual data entry, state portal submission, and final CHAR500 filing. Your only job is to review the clean data and sign the review statement; our compliance agency handles the rest. Breaking Through The Lens Mission: Founded in 2018, Breaking Through The Lens (BTTL) is a US 501(c)(3) non-profit supporting women and LGBTQIA+ filmmakers through vital support at the financing stage.
