Volunteer Game Developer (Three.js / WebGL / Blender) — AI Apps & Interactive Simulations
About the Apps and Agents Team
Our team pairs emerging generative AI and agent architectures with Crossing Party Lines’ proven, real-world depolarization frameworks. As we explore new ways to make these practices engaging, interactive 3D web environments help bridge the gap between static text chats and immersive, presence-driven human communication practice. Crossing Party Lines is also preparing an application to Y Combinator as we look to scale our tools to wider audiences.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and maintain performant, responsive web-based 3D scenes using Three.js, React Three Fiber (R3F), or equivalent WebGL frameworks.
- Optimize, rig, texture, and export lightweight 3D assets and character models from Blender into web-friendly formats (e.g., glTF/GLB).
- Implement interactive scene mechanics — camera transitions, simple avatar animations/gestures, environmental triggers, and dialogue UI overlays.
- Connect 3D client interfaces with backend conversational APIs and dynamic AI agent state streams.
- Ensure cross-browser stability, fast load times, and smooth mobile/desktop performance.
- Collaborate closely with UI/UX designers, game artists, and backend AI engineers to iterate rapidly on interactive prototypes.
You May Be a Good Fit If You
- Have hands-on experience building interactive web experiences using Three.js, React Three Fiber, or Babylon.js.
- Are proficient in Blender for modeling, UV unwrapping, rigging, basic animation, and web-targeted asset optimization (draw calls, polygon count, texture compression).
- Understand core web development principles (JavaScript/TypeScript, modern CSS, DOM manipulation, responsive layouts).
- Can translate high-level design concepts into smooth, lightweight browser interactions without unnecessary technical overhead.
- Are comfortable collaborating with diverse team members across different backgrounds, fields, and perspectives.
What You’ll Gain
- Production experience building novel web-3D applications that integrate with real-time generative AI agents.
- A tangible, portfolio-ready interactive project demonstrating WebGL and asset optimization skills in the civic tech and serious gaming domain.
- Direct collaboration with developers, designers, and leadership on early-stage products aiming for major accelerator backing.
- Professional references recognizing your technical delivery and contributions.
Time, Location, and Support
This is a remote volunteer position. You may complete most of the work on your own schedule. We hope volunteers can contribute approximately 8 or more hours per week, although hours are flexible. Team members should also be available for one or two online team meetings per week. You will report to Lisa Swallow, co-founder of Crossing Party Lines and lead of the Apps and Agents team. You will work closely with other volunteers and developers and will receive background information, product specifications, and access to the CPL frameworks underlying the applications. We welcome applicants from different backgrounds, professions, political viewpoints, and lived experiences. Crossing Party Lines does not ask volunteers to agree politically. We ask them to approach differences with curiosity, respect, and a sincere desire to understand.
