Volunteer Fire Support Technician On-Scene

General Statement of Job

This is a volunteer position only. $10 stipend per county guidelines.

Examples of Work

• Respond to emergency calls including fires and fire alarms, emergency medical calls, hazardous conditions, and other emergency situations.
• Perform non-certified firefighting support duties, to include, driving and/or operating fire apparatus, operating radio equipment, operating and maintaining firefighting tools, opening and closing fire hydrants and/or mapping fire hydrants, directing traffic away from hazardous or sensitive areas/protection of fire hose, warm-zone rescue activities, emergency medical care, and stabilizing hazardous situations for firefighters and bystanders.
• Implement actions necessary to save lives and property.
• Aid in maintaining scene safety for all personnel and bystanders.
• Drive/operate fire department apparatus to emergency scenes or other assignments.
• Operate and maintain firefighting equipment and tools.
• Assist in the maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment.
• Attend ongoing training classes and drills; maintain required certifications.
• Absorb control of scene and non-injured parties.
• Complete required reports and paperwork for incidents.
• Perform fire prevention duties as assigned.
• Maintain adequate inventory; restock as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Good driving record.
• Valid driver license.
• CPR and EVOC certification within 6 months of appointment.
• Training and/or certification in at least one area of “warm zone” mission execution within two (2) months of appointment.

Other Requirements

• Physical requirements and abilities:
  • Exertion upwards of 200 pounds of force occasionally, 100 pounds of force frequently, and 50 pounds of force constantly in the performance of warm-zone fire suppression duties, evacuation and care of injured persons, and the use of emergency and related fire equipment.
  • Ability to traverse irregular, uneven, and/or erratically moving surfaces frequently.
  • Ability to position self in confined areas, for work overhead and to ascend/descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, poles, ramps, and the like.
  • Must always maintain composure in response to emergency situations.
  • Requires exposure to situations typical of warm zone fire suppression duties.
  • Requires exposure to outside atmospheric conditions.
  • Must be able to move about on hands, knees, and feet.
  • The ability to grasp, pull, pinch, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with hands is required.
  • May require ability to read gauges and use computational math in certain situations.
  • Ability to communicate and interpret information through two-way radio.

Requirements

• This position requires that you live within Okaloosa County or within 15 miles of Station 41, 4418 Poverty Creek Rd., Crestview, FL 32536, if out of Okaloosa County?
• Do you have at least a high school diploma or GED?
• Are you at least 18 years of age?
• Do you possess a current CPR certification or can you obtain within 6 months of appointment?
• Do you currently possess an EVOC certification or can you obtain within 6 months of appointment?
• Do you possess training and/or certification in at least one area of “warm zone” mission execution or can you obtain within two (2) months of appointment?
• Have you had more than 1 at-fault accident within the past 12 months?
• Have you had 3 or more moving violations within the past 3 years?
• Have you had 2 or more at-fault accidents within the past 3 years?
• Have you had a DUI or Reckless Driving offense within the past 3 years?
• Do you possess a valid driver license?
