VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR, PLUMBING (CORRECTIONAL FACILITY)

About the role

Under the general supervision of the Principal and the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Vocational Instruction (SVI), the Vocational Instructor for Plumbing implements the California Department of Corrections (CDCR) learning goals and objectives. Vocational Instructors work within the policies and practices of the Office of Correctional Education, including the implementation of only the approved curriculum. Vocational Instructors are expected to prepare instruction and assessment aligned with the policies and regulations of the CDCR Office of Correctional Education, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and the partner organizations and associations through which CDCR students receive trade certifications.

Responsibilities

• Implement CDCR learning goals and objectives for plumbing vocational training.
• Prepare instruction and assessment materials aligned with CDCR Office of Correctional Education policies, California Commission on Teacher Credentialing regulations, and trade certification standards.
• Maintain cooperative working relationships within the department, other governmental agencies, health care partners, and communities.

Working Conditions

• Work at the California Correctional Institution (CCI), a multi-level, sensitive needs yard facility in Tehachapi, CA (Kern County).
• Exposure to varied temperatures dependent on the season.
• Facility is located in the Tehachapi Mountains, approximately 325 miles south of Sacramento and 120 miles north of Los Angeles.
• Commute times: 15 minutes from Tehachapi City, 1 hour 15 minutes from Lancaster/Palmdale, and 1 hour from Bakersfield.
• Median home purchase price in Tehachapi: $442,250.
• Centrally located for travel: 4 hours to Las Vegas, 2 hours to Los Angeles, 5 hours to San Diego, 3 hours to the Central Coast, and 2.25 hours to Paso Robles Wine Country.
• Daily food trucks available on-site.
• Van/car pools may be available.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid California Teaching Credential for the appropriate subject specialty.
• Applicants with foreign degrees/transcripts must obtain and submit verification of U.S. course/degree equivalency.
• New hires must submit to a background investigation, including Live Scan Fingerprinting, and a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by annual testing thereafter.
• Must meet Minimum Qualifications as outlined in the Class Specification for Vocational Instructor, Plumbing (Correctional Facility).

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience in vocational instruction or training, particularly in plumbing or related trades.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a correctional facility environment.
