About the role

Join the marketing and communications team in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences as a visual storyteller. This position captures, produces, and edits videos and still photos of the college’s activities and people for internal and external audiences, supporting branding, campaigns, and editorial needs. Target audiences include prospective and current students, alumni, donors, industry partners, and the general public.

Projects may include news-style videos, social media videos, photography for print and digital (including web and social media), event coverage, and faculty/staff headshots. The role involves repurposing content for various platforms (e.g., adjusting aspect ratios, file sizes) and managing concurrent assignments with rapid turnaround times.

The visual content creator will develop ideas independently and collaboratively, oversee the college’s YouTube presence, assist with social media content (e.g., reels), and work within the college’s content management system. The role also includes managing and maintaining the college’s photo library and storage software, ensuring proper tagging and organization.

Occasional work on nights and weekends is required, and some assignments may involve travel outside of Blacksburg. The position reports to the director of marketing and communications and is based at Virginia Tech’s campus in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Capture, produce, and edit videos and photos for internal and external audiences.
• Fulfill daily video and photo assignments to support branding, campaigns, and editorial needs.
• Create content for various platforms, including news-style videos, social media videos, and photography for print/digital use.
• Repurpose content for different platforms (e.g., adjusting aspect ratios, file sizes).
• Develop ideas for video and photo content independently and collaboratively.
• Oversee the college’s YouTube presence and assist with social media content creation (e.g., reels).
• Work within the college’s content management system.
• Manage and maintain the college’s photo library and storage software, ensuring proper tagging and organization.
• Meet short-term and long-term deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Occasional work on nights, weekends, and travel outside of Blacksburg.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in video or film production, visual communications, journalism, new media, fine arts, or equivalent work/academic experience.
• Demonstrated experience as a photographer, videographer, or digital content expert in a dynamic, high-energy higher education or agency environment.
• Portfolio showcasing deep knowledge of photography, videography, and editing.
• Experience working independently and as part of a team, multitasking, and meeting deadlines.
• Demonstrated experience producing written and visual content (video, photos, graphics) for social media and digital platforms.
• Experience executing and planning creative campaigns.
• Familiarity with industry social media trends and best practices, especially YouTube.
• Knowledge of Virginia Tech or higher education settings.
• Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and quick turnarounds.
• Experience collaborating with internal and external teams and stakeholders.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or other video editing platforms.

Pay

$50,000 to $56,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

Schedule

40 hours per week. Occasional nights, weekends, and travel may be required.
