Visiting Part-Time Lecturer in History
Visiting part-time faculty position to teach two sections of Native American History 1: The Indians' New World (19 students each) during the fall 2026 semester, beginning in August 2026.
About the role
This course is a survey of Native American history from the pre-Columbian era through the mid-19th century. The curriculum explores themes such as trade, work, war, disease, gender, and religion in early North America, while challenging common assumptions about Native American history. Key questions include:
- What assumptions do many Americans have about Native history?
- Where do Native Americans appear in national and local narratives, where are they absent, and why?
- What was life like in North America 500 years ago?
- How did Native Americans react and relate to various forms of European settler colonialism?
- How do particularities of sex, age, and geographical location demonstrate diverse experiences among Native Americans?
The course begins with theories of origin and life in North America before 1492 and concludes with forced "removals" of the mid-19th century.
Requirements
- Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching and inclusive pedagogies, informed by current practice and scholarship in the field.
- Ph.D. preferred.

- Teach two sections of HIST 271: Native American History 1: The Indians' New World (19 students each).

Pay
Compensation for teaching two courses in the Fall 2026 semester is $21,300.
