Division V at Clarkson University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Engineering Science to support an expanded undergraduate teaching need across the Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Aeronautical Engineering (AE) programs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four course sections per academic year, including:
    • One or two sections of ES260 (Materials Science) per semester
    • One or two sections of ES330 (Fluid Mechanics) per semester
    • One or two sections of ES340 (Thermodynamics) per semester

    Total teaching load not to exceed 4 classes per semester.

  • Develop and deliver lecture materials, assignments, laboratory/recitation exercises, and assessments aligned with course learning outcomes.
  • Maintain current, well-organized course content using standard course management systems (e.g., Moodle).
  • Hold regular office hours and remain available to support student learning outside of scheduled class time.
  • Provide academic support and mentorship to undergraduate students in the Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering programs.
  • Respond promptly to student inquiries and provide timely, constructive feedback on assignments and exams.
  • Refer students to appropriate university resources as needed.
  • Coordinate with MAE program lead to ensure course content aligns with ME and AE program requirements and accreditation standards (e.g., ABET).
  • Participate in course and curriculum development discussions as needed.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of course materials and teaching methods.
  • Attend department and division meetings as required.
  • Participate in university and division events, such as orientation, advising days, or open houses, as needed.
  • Engage in professional development activities relevant to engineering education.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including grades and attendance, in accordance with university policy.
  • Submit grades and other required documentation by university deadlines.
  • Adhere to university academic policies and standards of professional conduct.
  • Assist with other teaching-related duties, division initiatives, and academic activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering Science, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching or assisting in undergraduate engineering courses, particularly in materials science, fluid mechanics, or thermodynamics.
  • Strong foundation in core engineering science fundamentals, including materials science, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate engineering courses effectively, including lecture delivery, lab/recitation coordination, and assessment design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for classroom instruction and student mentorship.
  • Proficiency with course management systems (e.g., Moodle) and standard engineering software/tools relevant to course content.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty across the Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering programs.
  • Strong organizational skills, including timely grading, record-keeping, and meeting academic deadlines.
  • Commitment to student success and inclusive teaching practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Science, or a closely related field.
  • Prior university-level teaching experience.
  • Prior classroom teaching experience at the college level.

Pay

USD $75,000.00 - USD $85,000.00 per year
