About the role

BookNook is seeking tutors available to support students across the United States in math and reading. Tutors must be ready to actively participate in the application and onboarding process to support students during the upcoming fall. This role involves meeting with students in consistent, recurring weekly sessions using the BookNook virtual classroom and fully provided lesson content—no lesson planning required.

To align with anticipated tutoring days and times, tutors should have availability for at least one hour on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM ET. While tutors can set their own hours, availability during this peak demand window maximizes booking opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver pre-designed, best-practice math lessons to students in grades K–8, often working with those seeking to improve skills at or below grade level.
  • Build meaningful professional connections with students, creating an encouraging and motivating learning environment.
  • Attend at least 80% of claimed sessions to provide students with stable support.
  • Drop sessions when unavailable, allowing peers in the collaborative tutor community to cover them.

Requirements

  • Experience as a classroom teacher, EL/ESL/ELL instructor, tutor, coach, or similar student support role; a college degree is preferred.
  • Ability to build rapport and deliver supportive corrections to students.
  • Reliable technology: a computer (laptop or desktop), webcam, distraction-free environment, and high-speed internet (minimum 20 mbps).
  • Must reside in and tutor from one of the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, or Washington, DC.
  • All sessions must be conducted from within the 50 United States or Washington, DC.

Pay

$20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session), with opportunities for seasonal incentive payments.

Schedule

  • Follows the school year, September to May, with most sessions lasting 30 minutes.
  • Tutors enjoy full flexibility in setting their schedule but must attend at least 80% of claimed sessions for consistency.
  • Peak demand occurs between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM ET, Monday through Thursday.

Benefits

  • Earnings for completed sessions, regardless of student attendance, with additional seasonal incentive payments.
  • No lesson preparation—all curriculum materials, lesson structures, and virtual tools are provided.
  • Ultimate flexibility in claiming sessions, with seamless backup coverage for up to 20% of claimed sessions when unavailable.
  • Join a collaborative national community of educators delivering a proven, high-impact tutoring program.

Application Process

  • Submit an online application using a personal email.
  • Applicants may be invited to submit a 5-minute recorded demonstration of their tutoring style using provided sample lesson content.
  • Invitation to a 15-minute virtual meeting with the BookNook team to learn more about the role.
  • Onboarding steps include setting up a payment account, completing an FBI background check (reimbursed up to $99), and a paid, self-paced tutor certification.
